I successfully went from 4.5 OFW to Luma3DS CFW. I used the guide https://www.reddit.com/r/3dshacks/wiki/gateway_a9lh and followed it exactly.

After placing the arm9loaderhax.bin in payloads and pressing down on the D-Pad I get a black screen. I can boot to Luma3DS just fine, but not Gateway mode.

Then I tried downloading the 3.7.2 GW firmware pack and following the guide for CtrBootManager https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-gateway-ctrbootmanager-setup-auto-boot.407660/ and when going in to the Homebrew channel and selecting Gateway it does the exact same thing, black screen.

I am using the old SD card I used for my Gateway back in the day before I changed to Luma3DS. Should I back up the files on the SD card, reformat the SD card, put the files back on and try again (I heard the emunand is on another partition on the SD card) or is there something else I gotta do?

Looks like I need to do this part - https://github.com/Plailect/Guide_R...ax)#section-v---removing-rednand-from-your-sd

I asked about this earlier in https://gbatemp.net/threads/cfw-questions.444187/ My Q:"Should I completely reformat the SD card before getting this guide started?" as told by @sj33 A:"You don't necessarily need to format your SD card."

Judging by this guide, I do need to remove my EmuNand, I think. "Section V - Removing RedNAND from your SD 7. Select the "Format SD (No EmuNAND)" option".

Do you have redNAND? Or emuNAND.

I followed this https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-3-(A9LH) verbatim. There is no step in there that says to reformat the SD card. I think the guide assumes you're using a clean SD card and not one that was used for a Gateway cart. That might be the problem. Later this morning I stumbled accross this https://github.com/Plailect/Guide_RedNAND/wiki/Part-5-(arm9loaderhax)#section-v---removing-rednand-from-your-s

I'm at work atm, but later when I get home I'll give that a shot.
What I mean is, was your card formatted for emuNAND when you started, or did you clean it and remove the emuNAND partition before following the guide.

I did not clean the SD card (I removed all the files, just not the partitions). Since the guide didn't say to do that, and I wanted to use Gateway after I was done, so I thought it would just work. I guess not.

After placing the arm9loaderhax.bin in payloads and pressing down on the D-Pad I get a black screen. I can boot to Luma3DS just fine, but not Gateway mode.
Let's be clear on this. To get gateway working with Luma, you've got to:

1. Search for the file v2gw.zip on this site, and download it.
2. Extract the file arm9loaderhax.bin from v2gw.zip and copy the file to folder /luma/payloads on your sd card.
3. On your sd card, rename the file armloaderhax.bin that you just copied across to down_GatewayWorkaround.bin.
4. Download the Gateway loader file arm9loaderhax.bin.zip from Gateway's beta program page.
5. Extract the file arm9loaderhax.bin from arm9loaderhax.bin.zip and copy the file to folder /luma/payloads on your sd card. Note this in NOT the same file that is copied across in step 2 above.
6. Download the latest Gateway launcher files (currently GW_4.2b.zip) from Gateway's download page.
7. Extract the launcher.dat file from GW_4.2b.zip (it's located in folder GW_4.2b\Console SD of GW_4.2b.zip) and copy the file to the root of your sd card

Pressing the dpad down button on 3DS startup should now start the DS in gateway mode.

Also, if you want to access the gateway loader menu you need to press the left shoulder & select buttons just as the gateway picture is being loaded onto the top screen.

@erfg12 just follow what quantumcat linked. You tried to use the guide to run GW on A9LH with v1 payloads, but you've installed A9LH with v2 payloads, and GW's arm9loaderhax.bin is broken on A9LH v2, so you have to follow the guide Quantumcat linked to make GW loader work with your actual setup.

Sure. I didn't go searching. Reading through it, I notice that it's actually a little bit out of date. The Private beta is now up to v4.2, and with this beta version, you need to press L + Select to get into the menu (no longer just L on it's own).

Heh, just update the guide just now. Come at meh brah~ :P

Edit: Anywho. Black Screen without having followed the guide I wrote, is a result of v2 A9LH breaking GW's a9lh.bin. Black Screen after having followed the guide I wrote, is a result of not having removed EmuNAND//RedNAND properly, but having it removed with a third-party tool like EaseUS or whatever else.

You know what, something else that doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere is the fact that if you try to use an external boot manager with a DSTwo cartridge with Luma3DS you will get a black screen as well. You have to specify where the Luma.bin is located via the settings (hold select on bootup). After I did that, the DSTwo cart worked.

I see lots of guides with how to setup Gateway+Luma3DS, and even some of those guides will show you different external boot managers for setup, but none of them will specify that if you do that, you can't run memory intensive games like Super Smash Bros 3ds, or some flash carts like the DSTwo without this 1 extra step.

My guide doesn't cover that because it uses Luma3DS' own payload chainloading feature to work, since it's preferable to keep Luma3DS as your main, instead of using it as a secondary.

As for the Black Screen on DS stuff, it's actually covered in Luma3DS' own FAQ Wiki Page.

Yup, good call. I didn't mean your tutorial, I meant the ones that talk about the multiboot setup. They don't specify that you will have an issue using DS carts and playing SSB.
