One of my friends gave me a PS2 a while back, and I thought of hacking it to give it many features for emulation,

It's a Skinny/Slim PS2 with USB Support. I was wondering if it could handle playing Homebrew on it, and what benefits you might be able to get with a hacked one. Obviously stuff like HBC Games, Emulation, and DVD Support. But overall would it really be worth it?

It can handle it if you get a model below SCH-9000 iirc. From what I've seen, you can't use an hdd on it so it'd be in your best interest to use burnt discs, unless you can deal with slower load speeds on a usb. The benefits you get include everything obvious, and you'll save your laser if you use usb games. Burnt discs, I've heard, are tougher on your laser so you'll have to replace it sometime if it dies out.

Homebrew wise, you're far better off with an old Xbox.
PS2 is extremely weak when it comes to emulation.

It plays DVDs yes.
Backups will also be needed to be burnt to a DVD or set on USB (which is terribly slow)

Terribly slow doesn't even begin to describe it.
Even after you take a nap while it loads, the thing can't keep up with loading audio to stream and many games have crackling sound all the time.
It is for masochists only.

I tried to play Resident Evil 4 off a USB. It looked like the game froze at every cutscene and switching menus to things like treasures or the map also took forever.

The model number is SCPH-77001 so it should be compatible with HBC.

I don't really see any other reason to get into hacking it since it cannot Emulate as good, and USB Hacks will just make the game slower then usual. The DVD Support sounds intresting but I already have that,

Are there any other reasons to hack it. Benifits wise?

You can also play backups from your PC, iirc. Just connect your PS2 to your router. There's guide that tell you what else to do. Faster than using a USB (since the PS2 uses USB 1.1).

Better than USB, but still a PITA.
I don't think it is worth it to mod that PS2.
Anyway, I remember you could hack an IDE slot back into some PS2 Slims, not sure if that model.
I mean this: http://hackaday.com/2005/02/14/hack-your-pstwo-to-support-a-hard-disk/

To much a PITA, and I also think it is not worth it, but hey, if you like adventure there it is.

There's no HBC for PS2.
FMCB is probably what you mean.

Only reason to hack the PS2 is to play backups and modified games.
As well as Virtual memorycards
SMB sharing is also an option yep.

Well I thought of something actually.
Would it be possible to rip a game disc off of a PS2, and then emulate it off a PC for better performance?

Edit: Also getting confused here with hacking exploits, to used to HB hacking method. I will keep in mind FMCB now :P.

Erm... yes...
Not sure if easily.
If you already have it you can always download from the internet, while keeping your conscience clear. Totally fine with your spirit, probably as illegal as breathing in the USA.

I don't think the US Police Department would like me to download a game off the internet. It is legal to burn/copy games in the US as long as you own a legal physical copy of the game, and you don't use it for anything other than your own use.

It's just pretty much a yes or no question. But your sarcasiun shows its most likely a no, and that you would have to manually do it off of a PC (Or burn it on there.)

Over all I don't really see even a reason why you should hack it other than the reasons above.

Thanks for all the help :D
