I followed this guide https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-agb_firm-signature-patcher-gba-rom-converter.390313/

I installed the cia to both sysnand and emunand on my 3ds, yet it still says an error has occurred whenever I try to open a GBA VC cia I installed.

Thanks :)

You'll have to be more specific - you followed the guide and was able to patch your AGB_FIRM successfully? Did you patch your sysNAND's and emuNAND's AGB_FIRM?

If that doesn't solve the problem, what is your setup (i.e. CFW, system version, that junk)?

Yes I patched both Sysnand and emunand's AGB_FIRM.

My cfw is Rxtools, but I also have access to Luma3ds, sysnand is on 9.2, emunand is on 11.0

Have you tried other GBA .cias or just the one? If not, try more than one. And have you tried it with both RxTools and Luma3DS? Shouldn't matter, but perhaps there's a problem with a build you're using.

Yes I have tried it with both Rxtools and Luma, yes I have used multiple gba .cias

The only other thing I can think of is this: you installed the .cias to the SD card both times, right?

You've done everything you're supposed to, so it should just work at this point... Hmm.

Not to hijack the thread, but can somebody point me in the right direction on how to get Super Mario Advance 4 Working properly as a VC injection? I've tried all 3 save file settings in the footer generator, but no luck. It hangs on a black "save file is corrupted" screen.

And does a compatibility list exist somewhere for GBA VC injects on 3DS? This game might just not work, as I haven't had any luck with google today.

There's a thread on that ISO site that has a download available for Super Mario Advance 4 (with the e-Reader levels to boot) that you're probably better off using rather than trying to inject your own. "skmpowdjy's GBA games (color corrected, no ghosting, official-looking) (requests ✓)" is the name of the thread.

As far as a compatibility list goes, no clue. If you can't find one and people don't mention one, you should probably just ask around if people got the game to work.

Seeing that this thread is here, I'll ask a question of mine:
There are a few rom hacks that doesn't work well with the GBA BIOS (namely, mid-game crashes), but they work on VBA
I know, it's a rom issue rather than bios, but could it be possible to fix that compatibility issues by editing the agb_firm or something?
[luma 5.5 + a9lh, before anyone asks]

What do you mean exactly? That the GBA BIOS inside AGB_FIRM isn't accurate?

so since there is a thread about gba help already ill ask help here. I have sysnand luma 5.5 with bootanim 0.6 for a good while now and there were no problems but 2 days ago i decided to update to a9lh v 2 and update a few of homebrew and what not and yesterday i tried launching fire emblem sacred stones and all i get is a black screen, nothing should have affected my ability to play gba games since nothing really changed im still running sysnand luma 5.5 and bootanim 0.6 and everything else works like monster hunter 4, smash and other virtual stuff like gbc and gamboy just not gba. I have tried luma wiki and installing the cias it says and i have tried reinstalling the gba and luma any ideas?

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
