I want to purchase a hackable wii u, from the brief reading on this forum it looks like 5.3.2 is the perfect firmware to buy, I see ebay has few listings used consoles that's on 5.3.2, any thoughts on buying it from ebay? Should I get the one with tablet? I'm not really interested playing games on the tablet, just wondering if there are any advantages having a tablet for the homebrew scene. Thanks

Get the gamepad. You will need it for the initial setup as well as changing the settings and many games require it.

No, right now 5.3.2 hasn't any advantages over 5.5.1 (the latest firmware), with the release of the new kernel exploit. You can buy any console without worrying about the fw version.

Thanks guys, that's very helpful, will hit my local bestbuy to pickup one. Should I just get the barebone systems with tablet or bundles?

Any tips on the things needs to be done to prevent auto firmware updates? or things to be done for future proofing homebrew'ing

Well, tbh the Wii U bundles aren't that great imo (since none of them is really collector, except the Wind Waker one), so just buy the cheapest, you'll be able to use Loadiine to play games anyway.
And to block updates, use the Tubehax DNS (107.211.140.065) and block Ninty's servers addresses in your router's settings.

I don't understand why you shouldn't buy it because of the NX... We don't even know what it will be, what games will be on it, and if it'll be backwards compatible. And, right now, the Wii U got some great games, it's really cheap, and it's hackable on pretty much every firmware. Except if you want to buy it 20$ cheaper, I don't see why you should wait for the NX to come out to buy it.

Bad deal and a thief. Without tablet then its worthless. You need a tablet. This seller is unfair. I will skip it and looking for the best deal that come with a tablet. THINK. Be wise!

If you want a hackable Wii then looking for somewhere else. If you want a NX next year and do not worry about not hackable yet then skip this one.

Well, technically you don't need a tablet to use the Wii U, just a Wiimote :^)

(even though I completely agree, this is way overpriced and practically useless without the Gamepad)

alright, you guys are super helpful, i'm going to purchase a wii u now instead of waiting for nx.

last question, besides storage, is there any difference between getting the 8gb vs 32gb? anyway I can hook up my external usb drive to play backup games? try to save some money if possible

No, there is o differences between the 8gb and 32gb models (besides the storage, of course, and maybe the color).
And no, you can't use an external hard drive to play backups right now (because the current exploits don't allow it): you need to use an SD card for that, but one 128GB Micro SD card + SD adapter (~30$) will be more than enough if you just want to play the good games.

Right but without the Tablet via Gamepad is worthless anyway. Its nice looking and you shouldn't buy it from this cheater anyway. The Tablet via Gamepad itself alone is over 100 dollars. Thats not cheap. :)

What I would recommend is this, check out craigslist or ebay and other similar sites and just keep emailing folks asking them "What is the number in the top right corner of the screen when you check settings please? It should look like 5.3.2" and seeing what replies you get.

I obtained a low fw machine as a lot of people who bought the Wii U played a few games on it and never touched it after that hence no update. These folks also won't be trumpeting the fw version in the listing as a ploy to drive up the price.

Best of luck.
