Hardware Flash card to play ds games while keeping current cfw

Hey guys. My new 3ds is set up with... reinand? I believe. I use a gate way card i think. Someone helped me by walking me through step by step so I'm not as knowledgeable as i should be. I know i used a regular micro sd card instead of buying a pre-made one offline, at least.

Anyway, that's working absolutely fine. However there are a bunch of ds games i want to play as well. I was told i needed to get a flash card. The thing I'm confused about is that i don't know if using a flash card will somehow screw up the set up i have now. Would i just switch out the memory card with the flash card when i wanted to play ds games?

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!
 
Any DS flashcart will not mess with your setup. At most, if you're using emuNAND, you may be kicked out into sysNAND when exiting DS games.
 
I don't think you know what a flashcard is :)
It acts as if it is a normal ds cartridge, but you can put a rom-loaded microSD into the cart, which you can then launch using your ds/3ds. It won't affect your current set up, nor do you need to take out your SD card.

You can usually install an altered version of the DS Flashcart Whitelist or use Apache Thunder's TWL Slot-1 Launcher if you own an incompatible cartridge.

Oh! So it goes where the game goes, not where the memory card goes! That's much more convenient.

Could you provide a link to the most popular and up to date flash card? The links I've found in forums seem to be old. Also. If you've had experience with one before, could you tell me how one loads roms on to it? I'm not sure how it would connect to a computer , unless i need another Device
 
that just screams "workaround!" though which is why I think it's better to buy a flashcart that just works
they shouldn't cost that much more

do you want a cheap one or a good one
nowadays both are just as good
if you want cheap then get an £10 r4
if you want good then get a dstwo, I had it back in the day when gateway was the only option for 3ds games and I approve

The DS Flashcart Whitelist thing is a one-time install, so it may be a workaround, but it's not that complicated nor hacky of a workaround.

What makes one cheaper, besides price i mean? I don't mind paying like 50 bucks, or even more if it is as simple as putting the roms on the card then popping the card into the game slot. Still not sure how the roms get from the computer to the card though.

maybe they are made using lower-quality materials and have less features but for games both will run them fine

you just have to put .nds roms onto a microsd card and insert it into the flashcart

Like @Nyap said, there is not a big difference between the cheap ones and more premium-ones.
I myself own an 'r4i gold 3ds', which seems to be one of the most used ones for ds-roms.
I bought mine from a dutch site, but since you are located in the US, I can't really say much about where to buy one in 'murica.
Thought I heard some site called 'realhotstuff' or something like that was a flashcart reseller located in the US, but I'm not 100% sure. Ask around.

I can't tell you how to aqquire roms, as I don't want to get into any trouble :P
But once you have them, you're going to need some way to put them on a MicroSD card.
Preferably using a MicroSD reader.
My flashcart came with a reader, though I don't know about other carts.
Anyway, if you don't have a USB microsd reader or an SD card with a microsd slot (all readers, just different kinds)
you need one of those first. They're pretty cheap.

After that, you download the flashcart's own UI/operating system/game browser from the cart's official website. Put it on the microSD
Then, you make a directory on the microSD where you move your roms to.

Once done, you put your loaded microSD into your flashcard, put the flashcard into your 3ds, then play.

EDIT: Sorry if I made this sound complicated, it really isn't :P

No it actually sounds incredibly easy!! Thank you! I already have experience with .cia games and have the gear i used to put cia files on my micro SD card and i know where to find roms as i was using a ds emulator on my ipad. Think this should be pretty easy!

One quick question. My new 3ds is all set up with cfw. It automatically boots to emunand. However it constantly asks for an update. Would updating my emunand screw up the cfw i have now? I ask because i don't know if the version of my ds firmware matters when using the flash card
