You probably installed wrong files to the wrong destination, happened to me as well. You could update via the recovery menu, but as of now, I dont think you're able to downgrade it without a hardmod.

Edit: Wait you mean during the al9h installation, or after it?

no, all cia files were in the right directory. I've already installed a9lh on my o3ds, but now this happens for no logical reason??? it was during the install. Luma3DS wouldn't boot. well, it did once, but it didn't boot into redNAND.

Maybe you used the wrong files? o3ds and n3ds don't use the same files. Maybe you got bad files.

It looks like your only options are:

1.) Update now and wait for a downgrade method (not recommended).
2.) Get a hardmod (BEFORE UPDATING) and restore a NAND backup (recommended).

EDIT: Discussing why it bricked is unnecessary, as it bricked, and that's that - the end. Now we need to figure out how to recover from the aforementioned brick.

I've already updated. I had no nand backup. I started on portion 3 of the tutorial since I was on 9.0.0 firmware, and I had menuhax installed. I want to know what the hell happened. if it's that unstable, I wouldn't recommend anyone use the downgrader/upgrader.

Did you update to 11.0 or 10.7? If you updated to 11.0, you're screwed. Also, if you were on 9.0, then why did you do anything? RULE NUMBER 1 TO CONSOLE HACKING: Always make a NAND backup when possible.

You say it installed 3 CIAs then bricked, what do you mean exactly? Did it say complete? Did it power off? Did you make sure you were using the right files?

Also, had you been following Plailect's guide, you'd be doing the downgrade (I'm assuming to 2.1?) on your emunand, as well creating multiple backups along the way. What guide were you following?

I was following Plailect's guide portion 3. I only attempted to upgrade due to luma 3ds not working. I assumed it didn't like the firmware I was on. I made sure, yes. I even checked the sha-256. I hadn't gotten to downgrading to 2.1. the sysdowngrader looked different from what I remembered when doing this before. I still don't understand y it would install 3 files only. it doesn't make any sense. and, yes, I'm on 11.0.

Also, you obviously weren't following the guide, as there is zero mention of updating from 9.0.0 -> 9.2.0 in that section. From the guide in reference to 9.0.0:

"If you are on 9.0.0 or 9.1.0 you are fine where you are as both are almost identical to 9.2.0.

If your version is between 9.0.0 and 9.2.0, start on "Part 1 - Homebrew" then skip most of "Part 2 - Downgrading" (more info on that page)."

If you wanted to update to 9.2.0 for some reason, there's an entire page on just that: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/9.2.0-Update

So, while you may say "I want to know what the hell happened. if it's that unstable, I wouldn't recommend anyone use the downgrader/upgrader.", I'm of the opinion you screwed up by not following the guide, and it has nothing to do with the process being "unstable".

Currently there is no way to downgrade from 11.0. People are even having to find workarounds to downgrade from a harmod. You'll need to wait a little while.

like I said, Luma wasn't working, so I tried to upgrade thinking it didn't recognize the firmware. regardless, that still doesn't explain y it would install only 3 cia files. what if I had been on 10.7, and it decided to install those three files? that's the issue.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

and, it didn't power off. it tried to restart but failed to do so, so I powered it off myself.

these things happen, could be a crappy SD, maybe a knock to the system as it was installing caused the SD to be momentarily disconnected, or it could just be that it failed for *reasons*, while theses tools are fairly stable nothing is ever 100% and even if you follow the steps perfectly things can always just mess up due to some random glitch

afaik the only solution for you now will be a hardmod downgrade, this will be possible even without a nand backup, but you will need CN/OOT etc as your homebrew launcher entry point

thank u, gamesquest1. that does make me feel better. I'm going to try downgrading it with a hardmod. the only thing I don't know the answer to is what exactly happened. should it install 3 cia files and ignore whatever is the same? I know it would do this with emunand when installing via the devmenu.

never try to perform a full system update via devmenu, you should only ever be using sysupdater unless you are upgrading a specific known title and you know what you are doing

well, sysupdater really screwed me over this time. the only time I've used the devmenu for upgrading is with emunand.

I've followed Plailect's guide several times for several 3DSs. Old, New and 2DS. I don't think I installed any CIAs in step 3 and only installed 2 in step 4. I'm confused as to why [it] was installing CIAs. I've never had any issues either. I've probably done 25 at least. But for future reference, I ALWAYS start from the beginning of the guide and follow it to the T. Regardless of where the 3DS is at or how well I [think] I know the guide. Is a 200 dollar handheld worth shaving a half hour off the install time?

I've noticed that 90%+ of users that complain about bricking either tried to cut corners or don't have a NAND backup. Or both. At least you didn't tell us that you left to go to the restroom and your little brother come in and removed the SD card or something along those lines. Although you are blaming it on "unstable" software, so you might as well have.
