Homebrew Random "An Error has ocurred. Please turn off the system and try again" message

Hello.

Earlier today, when i turned on my 3DS, i was greeted with this message.

Before trying anything, since i havent changed any configurations recently, i turned it off and then on again, which allowed my Old 3DS to boot in Emumand as usual.

Shrugging it off, i went on to play my Fire Emblem Fates, installed through a .cia, but after a few minutes, the message came back.

Currently my 3DS is on, with Fire Emblem playing. I replayed the stage that crashed, did the exact same things and nothing. I decided to leave it on to check what would happen, and after around 10 minutes as of this message, no crashes have happened.

Does anyone know what could have caused these? Is there a chance they were just random one-time things that signify little?

Thats annoying, to say the least...

Unfortunately, Nintendo has left my country a while ago, so official support is probably out of question. It hasnt been crashed again though, which is at least a bit of a relief.

Do you remember how often the error ocurred? Were you able to use your 3DS at all until you replaced the wifi chip?

I got that problem and it was my sd card I gave it a little clean and have not had any problems since.

I got that when I installed a game cia once.... the cia might be invalid or corrupt

I got that problem and it was my sd card I gave it a little clean and have not had any problems since.

Cant be the game, i have played it for several hours now and this is the very first time something like that ever happened.

If TWL mode still works (DSiWare and DS Download Play), then it's definitely your SD.

I admit, however, that my computer knowledge is lacking. If i were to make a backup of my SD's files, cleaned it and put the files back in, would it work just as it used to be, or would i need to reinstall certain things? I have seen numerous tutorials on cleaning the card on this website, however, i havent seen much info regarding that...

Could the error, rather than being connected to the Micro SD card, be coming from the adapter instead?

It will still work as it used to be, but don't format it, as it will remove EmuNAND.

Huh, i am a bit confused now.

Is the general cleaning process different from a full format? The tutorials i have found state everything would be permanently removed, and the method i had in mind is said to remove Emumand.

My sincerest appologies, this is just not my area of expertize, as you surely noticed. Is there a tutorial rhat shows how i could go around cleaning my SD without removing Emumand?

If you reformat it, the EmuNand partition should remain untouched, and that may well solve the problem. Even scanning the SD card for errors on your PC may magically fix it.

However if your SD card needs to be replaced, you'll need to create a partition on a new SD with EmuNand9, dump the EmuNand, and inject it into the partition on the new card.

edit: I think it should remain untouched! No? Anyone want to chime in on that?

Very well, i think i have a general idea of what i should do?

In case i do need to replace my SD card....


First, i use this program https://gbatemp.net/threads/emunand-tool-release-and-support-thread.359239/ and select Extract Emumand. It will automatically take the Emumand from my SD card and create an .exe file. This file will be the Emumand.

Then, i copy everything on the SD card itself and save it in my computer.

Inserting my new SD card, i take the previous files, paste them on the new SD Card, then i use the program, select ''INECT Nand to Emunand''.

Then, selecting my backup, the program will insert the Emumand into my new SD Card.

Once this is done, will everything be working correctly? Or will i have to do something else? Games and saves themselves will be safe, correct?


Many thanks for all the answers thus far and your considerable pacience. I wish to gather as much information as possible before attempting anything, as i know how badly this can backfire when the user lacks knowledge.

You need to use EmuNand9. That can create a partition, delete a partition, and dump either your sysNand or your emuNand, as well as inject either of these nands. The dumped file will be a bin file.

Ah, alright. Just go to EmuNand9 and select the ''Dump Emunand to .bin'' option to create a backup? Then with the .bin in the new SD card's Emumand9 archieve, i can use Emunand9 to restore it?

So just copy everything to the new SD, open the Homebrew Launcher with CtrBootManager (It is also how i open my Emumand), open Emumand9, select Clone EmuNAND.bin to EmuNAND and then go back to gaming on EmuNAND like this entire ordeal never happened? I am guessing i wont have to Unlink the NANDs again, either, and that SysNAND will not need a similar process.

Is my line of thought accurate, or will i have to do something else?

Sorry i like to confirm things like i am a 4 years old because i am seriously afraid of messing this up lol

Thanks a lot for your patience. If i end up needing a backup, i will try this method. It is a good thing there are several different ways to restore a backup too (Was looking up other methods because the more the merrier), so even if this doesnt quite work out, i'll have other options, so it is another weight off my shoulders (There are few things more miserable than a tutorial not working for some insane reason when it is your only option).

Nonethless, this was of immense help, and i am sad that i can not offer anything but my most sincere thanks.

90 minutes after starting the 3DS, almost on the dot. I didn't even have to use wifi actively, as long as it was on it would cause the problem. Good luck.

I am guessing attempting to connect online would make it crash immediately? Because i made a few more tests and the Wi-Fi itself is fine (Connected, Downloaded and Visited someone's Castle on Fire Emblems with no issues), so it is likely the card. One time it even got an error on boot, before the Wi-Fi features, to my knowledge, are even turned on.

The problem is also happening a bit more frequently...did your errors increase in frequency as well? I am like 90% sure it is the SD card, and i'll be getting a replacement tomorrow, but the more i know about your case, the more i can relax (or worry), since fixing it would not be an easy task.

I am going to leave it on without my SD card for an hour or so and see if it repeats.
