Hello, i own a old 3ds v10.7. Ill be using oot3dhax to install homebrew and downgrade to 9.2. I need to install a custom firmware. I am a beginner in 3ds hacking. From the research i have made i guess these are the possibilities -

1. arm9loaderhax
2. rxTools + menuhax

My important reasons in hacking are as follows -

1. Play .3ds or .cia games
2. Install custom themes
3. Play GBA games with good speed
4. Play DS games
** Roms downloaded from net

Which do you think is the best way for me to go? 1 or 2? If there are new methods please mention them.

I also dont want to load rxtools emunand using browser as it needs internet - Source : Tut on YouTube (I have to travel a lot and myt not have acess to internet all the time)

A9LH+AuReiNand is your best bet if you want possibly a good bunch of time for removing the hassle of having the GBA games on both NANDs plus removing your emuNAND and having space for possibly an extra game and be able to do everything else on your list with some extra bricking protection granted you do the OTP fetching process properly. DS games require a ds flashcart. Home menu themes can be installed as lonng as you have HBL access

On a side note, why do new people tend to only see rxTools? Cakes or AuReiNand does what it does but better for less effort. Plus they're both supported to the date with constant commits and updates.

First, if you are new to this, I suggest testing the waters with Menuhax, mostly because it won't brick. Once you are sure of yourself and done the research, jump into A9LH.
1. Gateway 3DS is the only way to use cia and 3DS roms. Otherwise with free CFW's you can only load cia games.
2. If you have access to homebrew, you can install Custom themes using CHMM2. CFW not required, but it will work on it.
3. You can either patch your NAND's using this method or use AuReiNAND, which no longer requires the patches for GBA games to run.
4. No CFW works with DS roms, you need to buy a DS-Mode Flashcart for that.
I suggest not using RXtools anymore since it maybe popular, but it hasn't shown any real life in the past several months. I suggest following this guide, as it's the most up to date guide.

arm9loaderhax isn't a CFW but an entry point
The best CFW is probably AuReiNAND (especially if you install it alongside a9lh)
rxTools is outdated

With A9LH and AuRei, you'll be able to play .cia games (.3ds are only available using GW or Sky3DS) on updated sysnand (10.7 and no need for emunand)
You can install custom themes using CHMM2 (by HBL or CIA)
With A9LH and AuRei too you can install gba and nes games as .cia and play them at full speed. (which can't be achieved with an emulator)
For ds games you need a flashcard.
You should ditch rxtools for aurei and start here https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-4-(Getting-the-OTP)

People still favor Rxtools for the same reason R4 used to be so popular. Because it's so widely covered. There are shit loads of video guides and forum guides, all suggesting RXtools, because it used to be the best CFW and the closest to Gateway a Free CFW could get.
Of course now, it's a different story, but people aren't going to go back and change their videos/guides because that would require a ton of work.

Basically why you should always check for the most recent tutorials (such as Plailect's).
The methods change, become easier and safer, and using something from months ago can be potentially dangerous or leave you with a bad surprise.

I also suggest checking out my thread as well, tons of super helpful stuff going on there

Why not just recommend the first 3 parts of the plailect guide? It uses up-to-date methods, and even helps prepare in case the user ever wanted to continue onto part 4 and 5 to install A9LH.

I agree with this completely. Go through Plailect's guide up to the end of the redNAND section and get used to that. If you're perfectly comfortable with that and don't mind the double GBA install then roll with it. If you're not satisfied with it or you want that extra mile then continue on the guide and get A9LH fully installed. Just remember to follow directions to the T. You'd be surprised how many people have been told those exact words and end up breaking something because they decided it was a good idea to skip a step or not ask when something broke or confused them.

I see where that's coming from. I had initially wanted to run rx in only to find that the site was down when I was trying to do it. Went with AuReiNand instead. And here I am now, with the wonderful 100% bootrate A9LH with Mizuki and a custom injector cxi for it.

Yes nearly all of the posts in this forum seems to prefer a9lh+AuReiNand

Its just that there are lot of steps involved
https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

I guess ill have to go with this :)

I have some questions though
1. Does it directly boot to CFW sysNand when i power on 3ds?
2. Can I update the 3ds to latest firmware?
3. Will .3ds file converted to .cia file work for playing?
4. Have acess to homebrew without the need of oot3d catridge?

1. Yes(Assuming A9LH of course, menuhax wont do this), removing the need for emuNAND unless you REALLY need it
2. Yes
3. You'll either have to download a cia of whatever you're looking for or convert the 3ds to a cia with the xorpads manually
4. Homebrew Launcher Loader from yls8 will get you to it through an installable cia

Good luck!

Could you please elaborate what "T" means ?[emoji2] or provide a link to that just in case i miss that.

I mean don't skip or take any step lightly from Part 4 and onward. Most bricks in this stage is user error by skipping a step or missing part of a crucial step. You need to absolutely not take any step in the guide in part 4 lightly.

If you have A9LH installed and AuReiNAND installed, it will be able to boot directly into SysNAND. But you need A9LH for that! You can also still boot into your emuNAND.
Yes, with A9LH installed, you can update your sysNAND (using Mizuki, CakesFW, or AuReiNAND) as they all have FIRM0/1 protection. DO NOT USE RXTOOLS WITH YOUR SYSNAND, it does not have Firm0/1 protection and an update can brick your system!
You can convert .3ds roms to .cia files using this program
You can install homebrew launcher as a cia as well.

1. Yes, removing the need for emuNAND unless you need a 9.2 based exploit.
Actually, there's really no need 9.2 anymore. Almost all 9.2 exploits can be booted from A9LH. So you can still run emuNAND9, Decrypt9, ect. Since they all now work with A9LH.

I could really only think of gateway, if he even decided to spend money on that. Though even that supposedly has A9 support "soon"

You can install homebrew launcher as a cia as well.

Ill be going for a9lh + AuReiNAND
That seems better to me

Can anyone tell how much storage will it take at the end of the process in the sd card? I have a 16gb sandisk sd card.

I read that the sd card is needed for it to boot. Suppose I copy the contents from current 16gb sd card to a 32gb sd card in the future, will a9lh still work?

Any of your options will give you what you want.
Also, please use Custom Firmware subforum to post threads like this. The few good applications and games being developed are getting drowned in threads like this.

16GB is plenty of space, if you don't spam fill your 3DS like I did. If you are just using your sysNAND, it's completely safe to copy from one SD to a bigger SD card.
