Have you ever had a developers console before?

Might sounds weird at first, but I actually did years ago my family bought me one based on the ps1, it was black and I wasn't able to play most of the games I rented back then from blockbuster no way my family was going to rent a console that didn't work properly.
I thought it was broke and of course my parents tried to sell it no one wanted one and they threw it in the trash (which today wouldn't of happen :P) kind of sad but I've seen some being sold like the PS3 dev consoles that were used maybe a couple of times and sold it sounds pretty cool owning one.

Yeah a commodore 64, an amiga, a vic20, a spectrum, an amstrad, a bbc micro... (if it was a popular keyboard looking thing in the UK I probably had one over the years).

When hacking more modern/locked down consoles I tend to have some flavour of developer tools installed or active. In terms of the different hardware stuff then no, emulators and good coding practices can usually allow me to squeak by on a standard modded console.

I would like to have one of those someday.

A friend of mine just came across a PS3 Dev unit. I was extremely jealous.

I've had an Xbox Development kit before for a zephyr console. They seem to be popping up a lot lately enough to make me debate on getting a Slim XDK :P

I never understood the fascination with dev equipment. Yeah, i suppose it's cool because it's obscure and rare, throw it in the attic/basement for a few years and make some resale cash. But let's face it, a large proportion of surplus development hardware can't even run retail games. That's even if you can turn the damn thing on, a lot of dev hardware show-off youtube videos I've seen the, owners couldn't even power them on because of missing cables/power brick etc. etc. And even if they do manage to power them on, they can't access the GUI because of missing PC-side interface stuff. It's insanity to me that surplus dev hardware industry is so popular and lucrative, oh well, as they say "each to their own!" :)

I suppose it would be cool to find alphas and betas of games possibly stored on the HDD from the studio who used to own the dev kit, as long as your not an asshole about it and refuse to release it into the public domain. I can't stand people like that! :teach:

Nope, they tend to be a bit out of my price range. I'm not really a collector, but I would like to have a devkit for a console to actually develop things for it. A Wii U devkit would be cool, but those things are expensive.
