Are you concerned about bricking it? Everything is very safe right now, and when you get everything set up, you'll be able to play games normally.

On your o3ds you can get it working for about 40 dollars using OOT3DS and a powersaves. I expect browserhax may work eventually, because it uses webkit which is extremely buggy, but that's just speculation.

If you have a friend with Homebrew and oot3d, you can borrow their copy and have them install the payload.

If you don't and don't want to pay for oot3ds/powersaves, then your only real option is to wait for browserhax.

Just don't update if another update comes out. Unfortunately, if you're on 10.7, you may already be pwned as you won't be able to use the browser after a new update comes out (10.7 patches browser nag avoidance).

A payload is basically code that, when run, exploits the system and boots the homebrew launcher. You would use powersaves to install a save to oot3ds that has the payload to boot the homebrew launcher.

On the old 3ds, yes. The new 3ds can avoid the browser nag using a really hacky solution.
