Oh, I thought it actually replaced something in the boot process :)

I have firmware.bin and firmware90.bin in /rei on my SD card. Should I rename firmware90.bin to firmware.bin to make it use that one until I update sysnand to 10.5?
It corrupts the FIRM in a particular way to run custom code. So it's not taking over anything :P once it's set, it's set :P
Yes, use that one. It should allow you to run D9 and maybe FBI.3dsx.

@Aurora Wright
Does this have anything to do with booting a 9.2 sysnand with patches? I can't get any CIAs to install after booting sysnand with AuReiNand.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Have the firm90 bin file on root if SD card and firm bin in rei folder
It boots now, but still doesn't let me install any CIAs (same error).

Do unsigned things boot? If they do, it has nothing to do with this. :)
What are you using to install the cias?

That's what I'm trying to achieve right now.

Yeah so, FBI is a last resort exactly for that reason, it doesn't really work with improperly signed (read: non system titles), you need to use a different .cia manager :P

@Aurora Wright
I want to change the button combos but I can't compile the 3.5.1 build. What exactly do I need to have installed to compile it?
Also, thank you, booting into emuNAND with 9.0 FIRM works very well now.

Wonder if someone can help. Im trying to get my OTP on my N3DS XL system, i have gotten to Section III step 2 of this guide...

https://github.com/Plailect/OTP/blob/master/New_3DS_Spider.md

this step...

2. Go to http://dukesrg.github.io/2xrsa.html?arm11.bin on your 3ds

when i enter that url in the browser it just seems to load Decrypt9 and not flash the screen a few time!

Any ideas why thats happening??
Yes: you're not putting the right files on your SD. And this isn't the right topic for that.

Ok, so I did the following:
  • Restored 9.2 sysnand
  • Cubic Ninja > HBL > MiniPasta > sysnand
  • Cubic Ninja > HBL > FBI.3dsx
  • Installed FBI.cia and prBoom3DS.cia sysNAND as test apps
  • Quit to Home Menu and unwrap apps
  • Launch both to verify that they work
  • Cubic Ninja > HBL > arm9loaderhax.3dsx
  • System reboots
  • CIAs still run!
  • Install NASA.cia - success!

Sooooo, I'm guessing at this point that it's been FBI all along causing the problem. For some reason it didn't seem to want to install itself from the 3dsx when running through a9lh. But as long as it was already installed, it seems to work ok.

Phew, thanks for all the help guys!
