I'm following two guides, one which states to make the emuNAND frist, and one that states to set the CFW first. in either case, it doesnt work.

Attempting to create the emuNAND causes my 3ds to lose access to the SD card

Attempting to set up the CFW causes my 3ds to freeze (only tested on pasta)

What is causing the error, and what should I do first?

Assuming you're on <=9.2, which guides are you using? Some CFWs, like rxTools, default to booting into emuNAND. And as for emuNAND creation, what tool are you using, and what do you mean by 'lose access to the SD card'?

Depends on what you're doing. Don't follow the guide that tells you to set up Pasta, Pasta is outdated now. If you are using an old 2DS/3DS/XL, use this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/ and if you are using a new 3DS, use this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-how-to-install-a-cfw-on-a-9-0-9-2-n3ds-without-cn-oot.398394/

The two guides that I referred to are :
1) https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/
2) https://gbatemp.net/threads/installing-rxtools-9-2-0-20-w-unlinking-updating-online-access.409489/

When I create the emuNAND, none of the applications on my SD card show up. The system recognises that there is a SD card, but not its contents.

Also I use emuNAND9

Try using the Gateway menu to create your emuNAND. It has never failed for me. Back up your SD contents, download the Gateway files from their website, put Launcher.dat on the root of your SD card, and visit go.gateway-3ds.com in your browser. When the menu comes up, scroll to the right to get to the format emuNAND option and choose it. When done, turn off your 3DS (down + B shortcut in Gateway menu) and copy the backup of your SD back onto your card.

Well of course it doesn't recognize any of your applications; they're not on the card. What emuNAND9 does is it formats your whole SD card and creates a partition where your emuNAND resides.

I reckon once you create your emuNAND and put your files back on your card (because of course you backed them up), everything should be recognized.

Do I put anything inside the new emuNAND folder created? It seems to be empty and useless

I've already tried that, sorry for not clearing things up.

I'm currently adding the launcher.dat, thanks for your help thus far
I dont need a flashcard to use the gateway site, right?

One more thing: have you tried deleting your Home Menu Management information and letting it set that up again?

Nope you only need the flashcart if you actually want to use gateway mode. All the other functions are free.

Once you've setup your emuNAND and copied your SD contents back onto your SD card after the format, go into this directory:

"Nintendo 3DS/{long string of characters}/{long string of characters}/extdata/00000000/"

In it, there should be a folder labeled "0000008f". Delete that folder, and put it in your 3DS. This folder and structure may vary per region, but as long as you have a backup you should be fine.

EDIT: I should mention this will rid you of your theme and take everything out of your folders, so you'll have to set up menuhax again.
