Hacking No Display, Green Power Light On. New to PS3.

A friend dropped off a PS3 for me to inspect. He said he was not getting a display.

I never touched a PS3 really, so I began to look online and it told me to hold down the power button when turning the system on, then let go after the second beep in order to reconfigure the video.

That doesn't work.

So I was then told to remove the hard drive and if it's the hard drive and not the GPU, that it will boot and complain about there being no hard drive. Well it being an old George Foreman Grill model, I pulled out the hard drive from the side, but am still sitting at a black screen.

I also tried the old PS 1/2 video adapter cable but still nothing.

Does this mean the GPU is fried?

Probably. You can also try the service mode (holding down till 3 beeps and shutoff, hold button down to power on again etc)

Though chances are if you get no display whatsoever, something's probably shot.

Edit: You can also try to see if a controller will sync when it's powered on. The last shot is maybe just checking the thermal compound really quick, but other than that, you may have a video GLOD.

Another trick is too put 4 pennies ( form a square, don't stack them ) on the RSX, ( chip closest to the back of console ) reassemble and test. If you get picture / HDD activity, reball is needed. The cost of reball is the cost of a used slim now, so I just get the slim.

But who's to say how long the new used system will last. I think I'd rather refurb.

Slims have a higher chance of life. I've downgraded / jailbroke well over 2000 consoles, out of all them consoles, phats were the problematic ones with no display. Occasionally a slim will do the same. But IMO, it's not work putting the money into a PHAT, onces the RSX goes, the CPU is soon to follow.

If you do refurb it, make sure it's a legit reball and not a reflow.

4 pennies is just a quick fix to confirm the RSX is bad, put them between the heatsink and RSX it basically compresses the RSX and makes the solder reconnect. You can also double the clamp on the heatsink instead of 4 pennies. Eitherway it's just a temp solution.

Reball they actually remove the chip and replace all solder.

Reflow, they just take a heat gun and blast the piss out of it causing more damage and putting a temporary fix on it.

Is there a way to tell the difference visually? I see a lot of replacement chips on ebay.

Nope. Don't have the proper equipment, sorry. Check ebay, "ps3 reball" read reviews. Stay away from ps3specialist, i believe he is a scam. Ive used him before, took 6 weeks for him to tell me it was a bad motherboard, he wanted more money for a replacement board. My customer said go ahead, a w
