Looks like yeah, yellows8 did release the 5.4.0/5.5.0 haxx, it's on his github:

You'll need a server capable of running PHP it seems, although it'd be really nice if the files could be precompiled so that you can localhost them yourself.

By the looks of things, it's only userland, however, I can't be certain. I cannot test it because

A. I'm not at home

The answer is always "don't update", or "buy another Wii U that is vulnerable, if you absolutely must update".

No. The browser was pretty much the only exploitable place on the Wii U, don't update m8.

I know your pain. I didn't know the Wii U updated itself when the 5.4.0 update happened.

Like, is there no way now to get any type of exploit onto my Wii U or would there be others in the future? I feel so stupid. I have only now enabled tubehax dns qq.

Judging by the information MrRean gave on another thread, the kernel and IOSU exploits should work on 5.5.1 but the entrypoint was patched, so they need to find a new one. So in short, yes, you guys will eventually be able to get homebrew.
