Sorry if this has been asked, but I was just wondering since their is conflicting info on this.
What is the safest susupdater to use (o3ds 9.9 if it matters) right now? Some people say julian20 made one that's safest and some say to use one by Steveice10, could anyone clarify this?

Ok, I'm using julian20's build which is apparently the safest.

When I start it, this is what it looks like -

The b button does work so I have to power off with the power button, and I'm afraid to try A or Y just in case something happens.

Is this normal?

Yes this is normal.
Are you sure you have the right firmware files? Double check, if you do you're good to go.

I haven't put them on the SD card yet, but yes I have them and I will be quadruple checking the md5's and hashes before and after transferring to the sd card.
its unstable yea, you can either press Y and go for it, or wait for justpingo to release kernel time machine which is coming this week.

I believe that JustPingo said that KTM is really only for noobs that don't follow the process right, since iirc he said all it does is check the md5's and hashes before installing, them it basically uses sysupdater.

Anyways, thanks guys! Hopefully it works out okay.
