Hello and thank you for any help you can provide.

I'm purchasing a 2ds for my daughter and possibly a N3DS XL for myself this Christmas. I've had the original R4 card and the R4i for several years but I'm new to the 3ds scene. I looked around on some guides but there's so much information out there I thought I would just ask those who are already knowledgeable on the subject.

What is the BEST flash cart on the market right now? I understand that question is up for debate but assuming price is not a factor, anything that meets the following criteria is what I'd consider the best:

1. Works with a brand new 2DS and N3DS that are sold in stores right now.
2. Requires the least amount of setup, or even no downgrading of firmware (If that's possible).
2. Plays 3DS backups
3. Plays 2DS backups
4. Loads ROM's the best. I would prefer a "list" over SkyDS's external button.
6. Has decent homebrew support like emulators.

I hate to ask like this but as I said it's hard to wade through all the information thats up to date and current. I see on the internet that SkyDS and Gateway are popular. Which would meet the criteria above the best? Are there any others out there that you would recommend?

For the 2DS, if you're going for a flashcard, Gateway is best. But for a new N3DS, a sky3ds is your only choice. And just for future reference, there are no "2ds" backups. 2DS runs the same games as 3DS.

N3DS only option is the sky3ds+

for the 2ds, I'd install CFW...or get a sky3ds+ for that one as well.

All new in box 2DS and 3DS will be on 9.2 (Excluding the N3DS) or lower besides the yokai watch bundle so you wont need a SKY3DS that being said if you want a flash card badly you can get a Gateway 3DS but if you dont want to spend a dime you can setup a CFW for free called rxTools which does much more than both carts can possibly offer https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/ if your in the US and your dead set on getting Gateway 3DS you can get on here http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/Gateway-3DS-USA-CANADA.html normally I recommend peachds but they are out of stock atm.

Yeah, if you get a 2DS make sure it is new in box and not the yo kai watch bundle, by following this 2 rules it will be guaranteed to be in 9.2 or below and you can play backups for free.

Getting a 9.2 New 3DS is rather hard to get and also set up, so you are better off just getting a regular New 3DS and a Sky3ds flashcart if you don't want to complicate your life figuring this one out.

Great information guys! Thank you this helps a lot.

For ease of setup on 9.2 and below, Gateway. For free on 9.2 and below, CFW. For 9.2+, Sky3DS+ is your only choice.

I didn't realize you could install CFW and run roms without the flash. That's great! Can I play 2DS and 3DS games this way?

I was actually going to get her the Yokai Watch Bundle http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nintendo-2DS-with-Yo-Kai-Watch-Game-Red/47376065

So I won't be able to install CFW on this one? What about the Mario cart version or just the 2DS with no game?

I will probably get a N3DSxl for myself. So it sounds like my best bet for that would just be to pick any of them up (including the gamestop zelda edition) and buy the sky3ds+?

This is awesome. I think that's pretty much all I need guys! I believe I'll get her that $80.00 2ds Mario Cart bundle and install the CFW on it, then get the N3DSxl and Sky3ds+ for myself (Keep the big toys for adults right? =}). If there's anything else I should know please let me know. Great community on this site.

The yokai watch bundle has a higher firmware since it was recently produced any other 2DS will be fine if you want to spend time looking for an exploitable New 3DS XL you can use this thread to aid you in your search http://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/ try checking in "impoverished" areas of your state as you will see older models that people have not bought or could not afford.
