Hacking [HELP] Updated console and hardmod compatibility.

Hi. I have a O3DS XL,with GW. The console was on 9.2 EUR FW and i have got the NAND backup of my console but,i sent it console to Nintendo's warranty through the store where I bought it. They sent me back the console in 9.9 FW. In theory,the only damaged part of the console was the lower screen but in the shop's receipt appears: "Change of components" and i dont know if they changed the motherboard. And there is my question: Can i check the NAND backup compatibility without doing hardmod?

I asked in Maxconsole Gateway forum but,they doesnt know how to help me.

PS: If i do a hardmod and the NAND its incompatible... The console its permanently bricked or i can flash the 9.9 NAND backup created before flashing the 9.2 FW?

As long as you make a 9.9 NAND backup before flashing the 9.2 backup you should be good.
I believe all you need to do either is a hardmod and a console that can power on.

'Change of components' would be the touch screen.
Why would they replace a working motherboard? It's the most expensive part.

The thing is that AFAIK they will often just send back a refurbished console. It's quicker this way so the end user doesn't have to wait for a lengthy repair, they just have to make sure to always have some refurbs on hand that they can send out to customers.

The console its on perfect condition. I have it with a silicon cover and a splatoon sticker xD

When the 9.9 was released i sent the console to Nintendo because the refurbished unit (With another SN) ,was defective. They didnt detect the Gateway,no problem. I receive the same console,with same SN but in the shop receipt there are a note saying: "Change of components and software update". In theory its the same console but i dont know if they changed the motherboard for any reason,for example,the only defective screen was the lower and they changed the another. Normally you've got a refurbished console now, for which your previous <= 9.2 NAND backup is useless (think of it, if NAND backups were universal, would there be any rarity of O3DS / N3DS below or on 9.2?). You may read my personal experiences / opinions / rant here.

Sadly, there is also no way to find out if the mainboard is still the same without being on or below 9.2 (and even then, it would not be easy). I'd think, though, from how you explained it, that a replaced mainboard would be unlikely. A hardmod is a good thing anyways, and you can't come out worse than you are now. And yes, just make a backup before you restore the previous one. You're safe then. So I'd say, go for it.

I see no logical reason why they would change a functional motherboard. If it still has all your settings/games/saves on it, it's probably the same board. It's possible that they could have transfered all your data off it, but it makes no sense. It would be faster to replace the screen than to do a system transfer to a new unit...and it's still the same shell, so what would be the point of doing a system transfer, then replacing the motherboard and screen in your original unit? AFAIK Nintendo doesn't even have any O3DS units with firmware above 9.2 unless they manually updated it.

Of course my warranty is very void (my battery pack is wired directly to the motherboard, and it's turning 4 years old soon) so it wouldn't really be an issue for me.
What exactly was wrong with the touchscreen anyway? Fixing it yourself would probably have been a better solution, you don't even need to solder anything, the only required tool is a small Phillips screwdriver. The digitizer part is $7.99 and the actual LCD part is $13.99 (and that's Canadian dollars too).

Isnt only the digitalizer. The console had about 40 white pixels (litterally) and the touch was broken. (LOL)

PS: The data of the console is untouched.

Considering the bottom screen has 76,800 pixels, 40 isn't that much.
IDK I haven't dealt with Nintendo's customer support since the screen on my DS Lite got damaged (and the shoulder buttons barely worked) and they wanted $80 to fix it because it was out of warranty. The woman on the phone treated me like a child (I was almost 13) and asked me to give the phone to my parent, I was like "no, this is my DS, I will talk to customer support on my own". Long story short I pointed out I could just buy a new screen and buttons for about $16 and fix it myself, and she was like "Nintendo doesn't encourage opening your DS", and I was like "the warranty expired 6 years ago, what difference does it make?". Ended up hanging up and later buying a refurbished DSi for $70 on sale.

Edit: Never did end up fixing that DS Lite, bought a DS Phat earlier this year for $45. Much more robust, shoulder buttons press directly against mechanical switches and are less likely to fail. Also GBA games don't stick out of the bloody thing.
