Do you know if it would work?

It would work.

I use savedatafiler to export stuff from .cia games all the time.

Let's say you are exporting from Omega Ruby.

Exporting:
1. On "User" tab on the bottom screen, scroll to 000400000011C400 (the ID for. The unlined figure is the value that'll appear)
2. Press button "Y" to export user save data to SD card.
3. Press button "R+X" to delete this secure value (so that you can reimport any edited saves later)

Importing:
1. On the "SD" tab on the bottom screen, scroll to the entry you want to import back.
Example: user : 20150918040000 : 000011C4
(format is yyyymmddhhmmss : <8 digit ID for game>, based on extraction date and time)

2. Press button "R+A" to import save back to CIA game.

If i put my own pokemon os cartridge (stock one), can i do the same. which mode of gateway do i use, the game menu "select" or the boot gateway normally w/o cia bootable. Basically asking if save data filer would work on real game cartridge and in which mode.

Assuming that your Stock cartridge was played on the same 3DS as the one that supports your Gateway 3DS
(which means that won't be encryption issues on later steps)

What you can do is

1. Use Gateway Menu to backup your Cartridge Rom. the save is saved onto the rom, so it'll be backed up also.
2. Put the rom that you just backed up onto your Red Cart (GW3DS)
3. enter gateway mode, press "Select" to select your ORAS game you backed up at Step 1.
watch the icon load at cartridge slot, but don't play the game.
4. Now open the .cia savedatafiler
5. under "User" tab, your cartridge will be the "CTR card".

Reason for giving such a long tedious step is because I recall that .cia files don't work on Classic mode.
Since retail cartridge cannot be used in Gateway mode, there is no way to backup cartridges directly using savedatafiler in GW emunand.

Honestly, what I wanted to was get my Pokemon out of the cartridge so my brother can play it. The game says the cartridge save has been corrupted but that's because I downgraded from 9.2x to 4.5 without taking the proper steps. The cartridge should have some pretty unique Pokemon I caught personally through events and stuff.

don't delete the save file yet!

The save file is still there!

Since the first play for it was on 9.x,

1. change sysnand back to 9.x (edit: I believe you backed up the sysnand before downgrade, use the back up)
2. backup the rom of the cart
3. use savedatafiler on the said backup rom to extract save file.
4. you can now change back to downgraded sysnand

That's a pretty good idea, lol if only it wasn't 20$, Ill wait for a price drop, haha!! Or when I have more money ;P

Information I have on saves are outdated, but there is a chance that there are CFWs that are able to run games with newer encryptions (provided you have the slot x bin or whatever it was called),
despite entry firmware being lower.

*risky*
+at your own risk+
[I'm not sure if this works on downgraded sysnands, you better go read up on it]
{like seriously, I remember that upgrading downgraded unit may be bad, but I cannot find it at this moment}

1. backup your sysnand
2. update your sysnand using a retail cart, but don't go past 9.0
3. you can now extract save file!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

this may come in handy:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-free-multi-patcher.391945/

seems like there is CFW that may operate in sysnand, and this may upgrade sysnand.

sysnand operation should always be feared upon.

I've edited my post to reflect something useful:

Wow, you're just confusing him, they're is a simpler method :
- Setup rxTools
- Use sdf to decrypt your retail cartdridge save
- Downgrade
- Then you can either inject the save into the rom, cia, or back to the retail cartridge (but if you do that, the save will use the old encryption, so you won't be able to use it on a 6.X+ console)

edit: I just released he's referring to backing up then extracting, effectively what I said.

you could try to see if rxTools allow you to play your game.

Find the serial and Title ID of your game here: http://www.3dsdb.com/
Find that same serial in SaveDataFiler.cia
Choose to export the save data.

I have a sky3ds plus running AS. I have what I believe is a .cia save file from a friend, is there anyway to convert it to a .sav? So I can upload his data on to my 3ds xl 10.6-31??

It'll be easier, if your friend just injects the save file onto your sky3ds using this 3DS + savedatafiler.

you probably won;t be able to convert on your end, if you don't have CFW/

You can convert Cartidge save to cia save but no Cia to cartidge

Extract your sysnand with gateway then update via your OR/AS cartidge run gateway/CFW via browser and get your save on savedatafiler and restore your sysnand with the gateway menu install your cfw MSET via browser/flashcard

Damn.... My friend lives in Cali and I'm in NY lol. I also have a 3ds running 7.6 I believe. Anyway I could use pokegen on that? That would also make me happy.

Unfortunately I don't have gateway. Nor do I think I'd be able to do that without a video showing me. I'm pretty scrubby.
