Are you using Windows 10? The tool used for download is now deprecated in Win 10. You can find download links in the batch script.

I would use CakesFW instead of rxTools. It is much stable.

I'm not entirely sure though I've found the correct firmware.bin or .key or whatever for the n3ds now that that thread's link to the official nintendo download link is dead.

I found a lot of files I think might be firmware.bin's in the reinand how to pastebin but that makes me wonder... is it possible to install reinand with the spider exploit so that having access to cubic ninja isn't required?

You know that you could always backup emunand and then update, right?
Even if something went wrong, you could always import the backup back. And if it affected sysnand somehow, VerseHell would have been affected by it already too.
