Hi all,

Brand new poster here. A while ago I got a New 3DS and am finally getting around to using it.

What are my options if I just want to play 3DS Roms and use Emulators?
I see there are a ton of custom firmwares, but they require Cubic Ninja or a flash cart. I was also told that gateway requires Cubic Ninja on the N3DS?

What are my options? Should I buy a Gateway, or a Sky? What firmware should I use, etc, etc.
I checked the noob questions threads but still don't know if the Gateway actually needs Cubic Ninja to work on the New 3DS.

Thanks all!

Never update your firmware on the System Nand (What you're on now)

Get Cubic Ninja.
Gateway is optional if you want to be able to drag and drop .3ds files onto it's mSD and play from there.
CFW is the free option to Gateway, you'll need to either wirelessly transfer files in .cia format (Takes FOREVER) or remove the backplate from the N3DS while it's off and take out the mSD to insert into your computer. You need at least twice the space of a CIA file to install it, space for the CIA & space for it to install to. Once installed a .cia file can be removed from the system.

Both CFW & Gateway require Cubic Ninja to initially setup.

Thank you so very much!

So I have a few people on Craigslist selling Gateways and Sky 3DS for less than what ebay people want for a Cubic Ninja.
Should I get a Gateway for $30, or a Sky 3DS for $32, and can I install Cubic Ninja onto those carts and use it to run the exploit?

Thanks again.

To use Gateway for the first time you need either Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of Time to run an exploit on your 9.0 FW console. You can then install a system settings downgrade and after that you won't need Cubic Ninja / Ocarina of time again. But you will need Cubic Ninja if you want to run Pasta CFW or other CFW.
You cannot use Gateway without using an exploit first.
Sky3DS is a different kind of Cart, it emulates a real cart, so yeah you can use it to run cubic ninja and install a CFW, as long as you don't update your console over 9.2.

I'd recommend Reinand. I'm in the same boat as you, and I was able to downgrade the MSET to 4.x to boot into Reinand painlessly. You'll need to set up an emunand partition, and once you get Sky/Cubic/OOT, you can do that with gateway. After that, I used pasta on SYSNAND to downgrade MSET, and the DS flashcart blacklist. Then installed MSET ROP, and Emunand was good to go in Reinand.
One more thing, before you create your emunand partition, install FBI to sysnand with Pasta. It will save the headache down the road.

If you plan on using Gateway over CFW, i'd suggest getting both Gateway & Sky3ds - Gateway does not emulate games, but Sky3ds does, so you'd use the Sky to emulate Cubic Ninja on the Sysnand to get you up and running.
If you're going to use cfw, then you only need Sky3ds to emulate Cubic Ninja.

Thanks all, I am buying a Sky and will use a custom firmware.

What does everyone suggest here? Frog I saw that you suggested Reinand but what you typed after that is Greek to me. Lol I pretty much want something easy to do.

If you're just interested in playing 3ds games and don't care about homebrew, sky3ds is all you'll need (& a high capacity microsd card).
If you want to get into all homebrew and whatnot, then you'll also need gateway.

I don't recommend buying gateway yet, just stick to sky3ds & see all the stuff PastaCFW can do.

If you decide that you want more from your 3ds, then get gateway.

Edit:
SuperCardDSTWO (flashcart) is what I recommend for GBA/GBC/GB/2DS games.

It did not come with YouTube preinstalled. Does any New 3DS?

Is it worth upgrading the virgin 9 to 9.9 for Tubhax? It seems the general consensus is a resounding no.
I downloaded the youtube app just yesterday, it worked fine on my 9.9.0-26E

However, yeah, I wouldn't recommend anybody below 9.3 to upgrade to 9.9

Do not update to 9.9. If you're getting a Sky3ds, that's fine. You can use that to emulate Cubic Ninja to get cfw up and running.
If you plan on playing games off the Sky3ds (More hassle than its worth if you're on =<9.2) get a large mSD for it.
If you plan on installing games to your 3DS' mSD (cias) then get a large mSD for your 3DS.

I'd suggest Reinand for cfw. You can follow my guide if you like. It'll get you completely setup with Profile launching (So you don't have to use Cubic Ninja after initial setup) - Emunand (far safer than using Sysnand) - Reinand cfw

http://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-setting-up-reinand-cfw-from-scratch.394806/

Once you get your Sky3ds & start setting up your cfw, you can use FreeMultiPatcher to log into the e-shop while on your current firmware to download the Youtube app (Youtube exploit requires internet connection every time you use it) if you want.

It can be a little confusing to set up, but the end result is nice. You just go to the ds profile settings to boot CFW, and then you can install whatever you want, and no internet required to boot the CFW.

If you can get the sky3ds quickly you can load the cubic ninja exploit, then load pasta cfw and install the ygw eshop spoofer and download the youtube app from the eshop on 9.0 firmware before its pulled!

Blah. 3 of my NSO + Expansion Pass family group members are leaving. Found one replacement so far but still need to fill two empty slots. I have 9 days or i eat the extra cost myself. But with a full group $11 for a year is a good deal. imo
