I use my AK2i which isn't expensive and it's a nice flashcart.

Are any of these compatible with 9.9 N3DS? (I also have an o3DS I could use if I had to) I wouldn't mind having a simple DS mode flashcart for some older games. I used to have a TTDS (I bought it in Korea before I knew anything, and he told me it was as good as the R4 which was the one I was looking for, but it insta-bricked a brand new metallic pink DS lite of a friend of mine). Anyway, I ended up washing it and ruining it, so now I figure if I'm going to get a new one, I may as well get one that works on my 3DS for convenience.

the R4i sdhc works on latest firmware of 3ds and i would recommend it if you are just looking to play some old ds games

You've heard wrong. There's basically an entire ecosystem of homebrew that exists for it that utilizes the extra cpu power the card provides, plus it can run the standard ds mode homebrew. Not sure about rom hacks, but I don't see any reason they wouldn't work...

The AK2i was a nice card, but it's been blocked on the 3DS and DSi for a very very long time now. The newer R4i and clones run nearly identical firmware and work on everything to date.

I would also advise that people get the DSi XL over any 3DS XL for DS games. The colors are more natural/saturated and sharper on DS hardware. To the point that I do think it makes a big enough difference to be worth mentioning.

Yeah have to second dubbz82 on this one. Internal CPU? SM:RPG + MMX2/3 working with an SNES emulator? Sign me up. Went through about 8 revisions of R4 cards until I found out about the DStwo and never looked back. Plus GBA emulator too, and I've had no issue with the homebrew on it at all (Doom, Lemmings, Duke3D, and about 50 other games).

ACE3DS Plus (a.k.a. Gateway's "blue card") and AK2i have been blocked since the 6.x days. You'll need your 3DS on an exploitable firmware (i.e. under 9.2) to be able to install the two known patches so far (timewarp-something-or-other and bluecardfix-whatchamacallit).

Just get a cheap $10 flashcart. Don't go for "3DS Gold RTS". I bought one and it was DOA. It was stuck on a white screen of death, with the proper kernel files and everything, and everywhere I looked it said that there's a high chance of breaking down. Plus the really really cheap plastic and overall quality... Bleh. So yeah, stay away from this one:

Dude I'm going to be honest with you. Since I see that you're big on /r/3dshacks you have an exploitable 3DS which you can boot with whatever CFW you want, so you can use that for GBA games and the like. So basically all you'd need a DS cart for is for DS games. In that case get the cheapest one you can find, and ignore the added perks that the expensive ones have.

The guy above me says stay away from the 3DS Gold RTS, but that's what I have and it works perfectly fine for me.

But... If you already have the 3DS XL, and you're trying to save money like OP is... Why would you tell him to get a whole new system? Isn't just playing the games the important part? This isn't like 240p at 25fps compared to 1080p at 60fps. It's playing DS games (which never really looked good anyway) for free.

Well, that's why I didn't quote him and since others will come across this thread I felt it was worth mentioning. It does make a tangible difference IF you have the means. I don't see it mentioned nearly enough and I think it's a bit flippant to dismiss the differences for whatever reason because for someone it might be a deciding factor. I see many GBAtempers fail to mention their entire situation so who knows if some don't already have a DSi XL already laying around?

I mean, yes, ultimately if you don't have a DSi XL and want to play DS games on the 3DS as economically as possible a DS flashcart that works with your version is a perfectly suitable solution. But it's not the most ideal solution. I know I would have figured that DS games would look better, regardless of scaling, on the 3DS's technically better resolution screens. And I'd also argue that color reproduction is even more critical on DS games BECAUSE they're not great looking. Many artstyles on DS games hold up simply because of the wonderful use of color.

If the $30 price difference between a DSTwo and the latest R4 clone isn't that much for you, I'd say to go for the DSTwo. Until the 3DS homebrew scene brings us more stable emulators, the DSTwo can fill the gap with its added hardware. There's still no Genesis emulator for the 3DS, so the DSTwo has that with access to jenesis and the Dingoo-based Genesis emulator at its disposal. CATSFC and TempGBA can fill in the gaps where blargSNES and CitrAGB don't perform well.

Regardless of which DS card you get, I recommend installing sudokuhax over your DS connection settings to run ROPLoader if you're using MSET as your 3DS exploit entrypoint.
