Hey everyone, I've looked around a little and there is so much info on this site and floating around that I can't distill the info that would be helpful for me...

Let me start off with what I would like to do and then some info about my hardware and maybe you could all help me figure this stuff out.

I would like to be able to play roms of older games (nes, snes, gb to ds) on mine and my wife's 3ds's. I have a feeling hers will be easier to figure out. I don't need to be able to play 3ds roms but if that is a built in feature of whatever card I end up needing then thats cool too.

My 3ds is a New XL running 9.7.0-25u so I don't even know if my goals will be possible at this time. Any help on what I need to purchase to make this work or the steps after that would be greatly appreciated!

My wife's 3ds is an old 3ds (non XL) running 8.1.0-12u and I need similar info on how to make it work. I don't know what flash cart to get or where to get them.

Thanks everyone!

Hi. Well, for the 9.7 3ds, you can get a SKY3DS for 3ds roms, and a regular ds flashcard (like r4i GOLD) for older stuff.
For your wife's 3ds, you can use Gateway 3ds, as long the 3ds firmware is lower to 9.2. It supports 3ds roms and homebrew, so you could use emulators for older stuff. It also includes a blue card which is a ds mode flahcard.

Your N3DS XL sadly has no flashcard capable of running 3DS homebrew that will allow you to emulate other consoles/ handhelds. But SKY3DS will most definitely work on your N3DS XL if you want to play 3DS Games. You can also take a look at SuperCard DSTWO since it's the one that can emulate GBA/ SNES Games with little to no lag.

On the other hand, your wife's O3DS will support Gateway. Take a look here for more info.

Thats awesome about my 3ds though. All we really care for are the older games. Any new game we want we can just buy at launch. So an r4i Gold would do for both of them? Is that what I am getting out of this?

You know this wouldn't be a problem if the big N wasn't so stingy with its VC offerings...

Where would you recomend I purchase these R4is from? I've seen multiple sites that sell them but every where I look I never see any info on making them do what I want lol

Oh, I guess I'm not following at all... Are we saying that my N3ds is SOL for emulated old games?

R4i Gold 3DS RTS can emulate NES and GBC Games perfectly. It can also emulate GBA and SNES games but with lots of lag.

OK. And the r4i cards are ds mode flashcards?

I'm sorry about all these noob questions lol. I have been out of the game since the dsi days and it looks like things have become super complicated lol.

Yes, it's a DS Mode Flashcart which means it only supports DS ROMs

There are only a few SNES emulators for the DS, lolSNES is based on the same code as blargSNES IIRC. The other one is SNESmulDS but many people have said that lolSNES is better.

Actually SnemulDS is better. Lolsnes has poor compatibility (compared to its counterpart blargSnes)

ok before I shell out for the SKY and Gateway cards. (THose are a bit out of my range for the immediate use I would get.) I'm gonna play with the r4i golds and see what results i get.

What dealer would you guys recommend that is reliable and in the US?

There's rarely dealers in the US. Try NDS Card, GBAtemp trusts them very much.
