I have the choice between the original 1000 model (in good condition, white colour, Japanese model), or the most recent E1003 model (also good condition, black, UK model).

I don't mind the E1000's mono sound as I'll likely use headphones, and either way I don't expect much from audio on a handheld.

I don't mind that it can't go online as I don't need it's network stuff and I have a PS3 or my PC to transfer content (and I'll most likely be using UMDs anyway).

I do like that the E1000 has the 3000's screen and is a bit bigger.

Both will cost me £20.

Basically, which do I get? Seemingly the E1000 as it's newer and I don't mind the changes but I want a second opinion before I 100% decide. Thanks!

The E1000 has more RAM available than the 1000, so if you're going to try homebrew and such and you don't care about the lack of wifi and mono sound, then the E1000 would probably be the better choice.

It sounds like you've already justified the purchase of the E1000 for yourself, and if you don't mind the handful of drawbacks, it isn't an awful choice by any means. It supports CFW just like any other PSP model, so it isn't as if you'll miss out if you want to play around with emulators and the like either.

you pretty much answered it by yourself

the stuff not in the list and good about the 1000 is can be used as tv remote through homebrew (it got a IR thing)
and if you somehow brick it you can use pandora. (someone tell me if you can use pandora on new models)

and in the old days there was ancient homebrew not ported to new firmwares i had to install a second firmware (1.50) to support some homebrew, which in the new ones it was not possible to install that firmware files.. but this info probably now is dead\no longuer needed...

Personally I'd go for the 1000 myself as an owner of a 1000, its sturdy and while it has less ram and older screen, its fully exploitable (IE permanent cfw) and it has Pandora for times of crisis. But get what you will think will work for you.

More RAM is nice, but no WiFi and Mono sound is a big drawback when it comes to the E1000. I'd honestly forget about both and try to find a 2000 (early model) or 3000 since they're superior in every way.

Yeah the early 2000 model was possibly the best of all of them, better screen yet still fully hackable.

I'm aware that a 2000 or 3000 would be superior, but I doubt I'll get one at such a good price (at least not now, they still go for £30+ on ebay and I can't justify the extra £10 when there's a perfectly good unit being offered for £20 right now).

Also, there really isn't anything multiplayer I'm interested in for PSP. I'm basically in it for solo RPGs (Persona, Final Fantasy, Disgaea).

I think people are right in saying I've kinda already justified the purchase. However, I'm aware that the 2000 and 3000 models aren't going anywhere, so maybe in a few years if I really like the library then I'll get myself one of those.

Thanks for the replies, pretty much solidified my decision overall while providing a good argument for the other models.

The extra 10 pounds is totally justified if you want to do anything web-related, play online via Prometheus/Xkai Link or have speakers that don't suck. Trust me, you won't regret the extra expense. It's also worth to note that the 1000 is a heavy brick while the E1000 is clearly a budget model with flimsy build quality.

But as I've said, I honestly can't think of anything I want to play online, and I'll be using headphones 90% of the time, so I can't really find a reason to ignore a deal like this.

Surprised no one mentioned how the battery is like on the PSP E1000 vs. the PSP 1000, 2000 & 3000 models. PSP E1000 only has 925 mah while the PSP 1000 has 1800 mah and the PSP 2000 & 3000 uses 1200 mah. And looking at this youtube video of how to take out the battery for the PSP E1000 and while the title of the video says it's easy, looks to me more of a hassle and annoyance and have to be really careful:

PSP 1000, 2000 & 3000 is so user friendly in terms of replacing the battery and all you have to do is remove the battery cover and that's it. No wires or screws to deal with plus you can extend the battery if you get a 2200 mah battery for any of the first 3 models.

It's up to you and if the E1000 is what you're going for then go for it. I personally would go with the PSP 1000 model that you described between the two. My favorite out of all the PSP models is the 2000.

Personally I'd never connect to a PC just to download a game, that is seriously gross. Media Go is gross. However, there is little reason to connect to the store anymore. Even when there's a really good sale on a PSP game (e.g. Star Wars Battlefront II for 90 cents) part of me would much rather hold out and play the UMD version.

I practically use my 3000 as an E1000 at this point, so the E1000 is actually starting to look appealing. But I've never owned an E1000 so I can't say for sure that it's actually better than a 1000.

Y'know, at least Sony gives users means to backup their content on PC. Nintendo is yet to provide that kind of functionality. You're ragging on a completely optional application.

Except why would I want to do that. And if I did, why wouldn't I just pirate at that point. Don't get me wrong, I love Sony for letting us having content on 2 handhelds instead of just one, and not only that the Vita lets you back up to the cloud. (requires PS Plus but still)

That said, I do kind of like the idea behind Nintendo's having the content tied to the system. It means I don't have to put up with any accounts, and it means I can sell/buy systems without having to delete the content on it. At least in theory. Nintendo does peddle accounts, so I was tricked into making an NNID and Club Nintendo account for my 3DS XL even though the accounts serve virtually no purpose. Blegh.

Because physical media, especially optical media read by mechanical readers (your precious UMD's), are prone to damage. Your UMD's, memory sticks and cartridges will all eventually die, digital copies that can be freely backed up will live on for as long as you care to preserve them. Not only that, one day PSN for PSP will just be discontinued, so preserving your software is your responsibility.
And if I did, why wouldn't I just pirate at that point.
Because some people care about owning legal content and supporting developers.

Tying content to systems is retarded, you're the licensee of software, not Nintendo. They are taking away your agency to manage your software and if your hardware gets damaged, you have no choice but to crawl to Nintendo with your tail between your legs and pay them their extortionist fees in order to fix or replace the console and access the software again rather than just buy a new system yourself and restore your content. Of course Nintendo can do that too, remote System Transfers can be performed in such an event, but you need to jump through hoops to get it done. It's insane and it shouldn't be this way, a simple account system would sufficie.

The hard drive on my PC will die too, so... Also, since when can digital copies be backed up, legally??

I will still be able to keep using my PSP when that happens, and the games downloaded on it. Even if I couldn't, then why would Sony let me do it through Media Go, for that matter why would Sony continue to support Media Go at all after that point? The way I see it I am at Sony's mercy whether or not I back up. (but I am not sure what you mean by back up anymore, since to my knowledge there was never an official way to convert UMD to digital)

Because some people care about owning legal content and supporting developers.
Well, backing up does nothing to help the devs, nor does not backing up, same for owning content legally. I can own a used copy of every game ever released by a certain dev, and arrange those games in a pile and use it as a bed, but that does nothing to support the devs. Supporting devs can only mean buying the game. (bonus points for buying digitally)

I think of it as a rental or as a way of pimping the console. But then again, chances are if I get a WiiU I'll end up giving in and make an account, in which case it was meaningless of me to compliment the idea of not having an account.
However, I just sold my Vita, so the Vita games I bought on it goes to waste anyway. Granted it's still tied to my account, but what difference does it make if I can't play it.

Since forever since it's an option in Media Go. You can make as many copies of the backup as you want at your own discretion, the lifespan of your HDD is irrelevant.

You can't convert UMD's to digital (you could for a brief amount of time in Japan with UMD Transfer, but that's besides the point since I never claimed you could) and we're not talking about that, we're talking about digital, Media Go and backups of your own content. Sony can't discontinue Media Go because it's not a service - it can't magically vanish from your HDD.

You asked why not just pirate the games and I answered "to support the devs", this has nothing to do with backing up.

The difference is that you can pick up a Vita at any point in the future and replay your games whereas with Nintendo they're just gone. Your console and your software are separate products, tying them together is nonsense.
