+2 years ago i had an habit of ".raring" "sensitive files" with passwords...
(by raring i mean, create .rar containers)

the thing is, i lost the passwords, i had been trying to remember and tried every single one i can think off. but its no use.. however, i managed to open one... but i had an habit of using different passwords..

anyone knows a bruteforcer (not based on dictionary pls) or some program that can unlock theese things?

and before anyone ask, i can't share the rar files (they had some docs like my msn history's, personal stuff etc)

I had this problem some time ago with some RARs whose password I knew was longer than 12 characters.
I gave up after one full day when it was still brute-forcing passwords 6 or 7 characters long, the time needed grows exponentially with the length of the password.
You will suffer...

What kind of monster would put nudes in a password-protected .rar? Nudes belong in the open!

Anywhoo, since you said no dictionary, that means your passwords aren't simple words, which would make it take an extremely long time. If you had some patterns that you used in every password, it might help.

If you have a spare computer, you could just set it up to crack your RAR file and let it run for a couple of months. That's about the only thing I can recommend. It amuses me more than anything, but I can't say I'm that sympathetic.

yeah, usually my passwords got some combination or are not on the dictionary :/ and i could use numbers\english or portuguese words..
i tried to type down every single way i could had writen them (the ones that i remember using in the past) (caps, no caps, first letter with caps, etc)
only could open one of the .rars.. the others i probably used some password i had for 1 month on other stuff...

What OS are you using? I haven't really messed with it, but I've seen a couple of people mention RarCrack in the past.

Problem with any password crackers they are good for maybe up 6 characters, anything longer then that would require roughly the same time it would take to travel to the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy (the closes to our solar system) even if travailing at the speed of light. Basically if you some how manage to keep your computer running, and make sure that your children, children's children, and probably next hundred of generations of children, is able to keep the computer going, perhaps it might one day crack the password. One covet is that you will be long dead, by the time the password is cracked. I really do not think you have much option, except to give up, and hope that the password comes to you, via I dunno perhaps in a dream? Even a 80 core computer would takes a millennia to crack rar password larger then 6 or more characters, even with SLI enabled (most likely due to most software cannot even take advantage of all 40 cores). But in case you are interested, you could try Parallel Password Recovery. Like many rar cracker password, this is not freeware and has a restriction of X amount of characters. Personally I have not had much luck cracking passwords over 6 characters long with any cracking rar software.

Oh jeez, with the addition of Portuguese words (and with them, characters with accents and whatnot) you're giving the bruteforce cracker even more work. Honestly, unless the contents of those files are incredibly important and cannot be replaced, I'd give up on the bruteforce idea. It's a waste of time, effort, and money (from leaving an extra computer running for god knows how long). I agree with RandomUser. Just hope it comes to you when you're looking in the fridge. Maybe print out a picture of the .rar icon and tape it on the ceiling so you look at it when you lie down in bed, for inspiration.

can use windows or linux
i will give it a shot..

thank you guys.. i will try to remember every single password i used on the past, meanwhile, since i have time to waste, i can let it run, maybe i used a stupid password..

anyway, there isn't backdoors on the rar files or something i can use to display the file list? i used rar files instead truecrypt or something because i thought the rar encryption was not that strong..

i know some rars got random stuff, but some of them got really important personal stuff..

woa parallel rar got a option "i know some componetns of the password/i know the passwoord but typed wrong"

this is really great!

I highly doubt there's an easy way to open a .rar file, because if there was then using a password would be meaningless. Regarding whether or not you can display the file list, I just made a password-protected .rar, and it showed the contents. If you can't see it, that means you picked the "encrypt file names" option, which means you're out of luck.

That is good to read that you have remembered the passwords. At last you know most if not all of your data are not sealed tight in an unbreakable volt at the bottom of the sea;). A suggestion, perhaps a redneck suggestion, if you do not want to deal with encryption, you could put all your impotent data on a storage device or 2 and lock it in a safe.

Just as an FYI, there are programs out there (I use RoboForm) that keep track of all your passwords, and give you the ability to encrypt them, so only someone with your master password would be able to access them. It's rather useful, especially since you're like me, and use multiple passwords so if you're hacked, you're not totally SOL.

the thing is, i dont use that type of software because in the past i saved them on firefox (which got a minimum security or none :/ ).. got a virus on my computer from a dude. he stole all my saved passwords...
roboform can encrypt the passwords with a master one, but i preefer to don't risk it..
the problem is when i dont open something for years.. i forget about the password i had used, or i made a unique one that i never used..
so far the only paswords i had forgot was on this case (rars i left on a external drive years ago )
