I'm about to acquire a 9.0 N3DS XL. Since the blue Gateway card isn't required (I have CN), do I need it? I have no plans to downgrade to 4.5, and no desire to play any DS games (to my understanding, the blue card only works on 4.5 and below?).

Can I give it to a friend to use as a regular DS flashcard or is there more to using the blue card by itself?

Edit: I may have answered my own question... I wanted to give the blue card to a friend who's 3DS is above 4.5, but they can't use it, correct? Or can they..?

You can install the flashcardtimewarp.cia to the system nand and unblock it and use it yourself

Thanks guys. I'll hold on to it.

Side question: I read that you could create fake access point profiles on 4.5 to prevent accidental updating (from a child or something). May be a dumb question but can you do this on 9.2 as well (Well, 9.0 in my case)? I would have to create them on Sysnand correct (after I have emunand set up)?

Thats what I did, connect to the internet once just to setup cubic ninja, setup emunand, unlinked the nands and made 3 fake connections

How do you unlink the nands? My gateway is on it's way so I have no experience with it as of yet.

With the nands unlinked, you can safely go into the Data Management on emunand (which to my knowledge, is the only way to delete .cias that you no longer need)?

Pop out the n3ds sd card and then format system nand while on 9.0. Yes there is no problem going into data management on emunand, just never go in on system nand

Always listen to zoogie and Ronhero. They've been around the block.

Hold onto it. It's gonna come in handy.

If your friend wants a DS flashcart the only thing avail right now is the r4i Gold. The DSTwo has been pulled off shelves.

If your friend wants a 3DS flashcart, best bet is a Sky3DS or if he can, another GW.

You are going to need Cubic Ninja game. Go find it. NEOW! You will need it to install the GW onto your N3DSXL.

Or

Do you have a Sky3DS already? You can use the Sky3DS to play Cubic Ninja or the infamous Zelda-OOT. Either of which you'll need to install the GW onto your N3DSXL.

But every time you exit the GW emuNAND you'll have to use the Cubic Ninja to get back in. So go get one.

Gotcha, thanks man! Ok I have 2 more unrelated questions and then I'm done...

1) Since the 2 will be unlinked, will they both have different friend codes? If so, I should use the one on emunand only right??

2) I heard that, to save a game, you're supposed to press the Home button and then close out of the application. Does that function like a "save-state"? Can I still save a game like normal (i.e. in any Pokemon game, just clicking Start and then pressing Save)?

Thanks, I may not have many posts on here but over at Maxconsole I'm one of the top guns on the gateway support forum

Even though I have a QN cart I am so tempted to get a sky3ds just to have several copies of CN to run various hacks so I don't have to keep deleting my saves and having to configure an internet connection

Will do!

I have CN :) Got it for $5 a few days after the exploit was announced. Got lucky on that one.

1 - same friend code

2 - by hitting home then exit it ensures the save file is written to the main sd card. There have been reports in the past that people lose hours of grinding because they didn't do that. On a retail cart this is not a problem but since this is not a retail cart it's highly recommended to do it to ensure your save sticks

You are golden.

Now, before you get all excited... there's one problem.

Currently there is no eShop access on Gateway because 9.6 emuNAND hasn't been released.

This means no O3DSXL > N3DSXL transfer until it is out.

In the meantime, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. Backup your sysNAND. Dump your ROMs. Start putting together all your .CIAs and DevMenu and such. Get it up and running on Gateway emuNAND 9.5 and be prepared to jump when 9.6 comes out.

It wasn't easy but I got the o3ds to transfer to the n3ds on 9.6

And eshop support shouldn't be a deal breaker 99% of the 3shop can be found online as a cia file

So you may save from within game. But for them to "stick" or write savedata to mSD, you need to properly close out.

SO ALWAYS HOMECLOSE

Chances are you have to anyhow. But if system fail happens before home-close, you're SOL if the save doesn't stick.

Common sense really... but accidents happen. There's no crying in baseball.

Holy s***. It works!? Does O3DSXL have GW? I don't on mine... What about things like version patches for Pokemon? Can you DL those for .CIA?

Okay, so if no hard-mod usb port or Gateway on Old3DSXL then he'll need to wait for 9.6 emuNAND, right?

So I'm not totally wrong there...

BUT, if he has Gateway on Old3SDXL he can do it even without a Hard-Mod?

Gotcha. Just to make sure I have it right, save a game like normal, then press Home, then exit (rather than saving like normal then just closing the 3DS into sleep mode like I usually do)?

No you need to save the game like normal first. Once the save is complete you can home and exit.
