I could possibly do some editing, just not proofreading.

We are looking for people that can devote time to this, and won't quit after 1 file.
Like I said, I can provide you the tools that auto translate from Japanese to English.
At that point its up to you read them, edit them, and save them

Well, I'm totally not going to give up after one file, but I might only be able to do a small-ish amount of editing in my free time.

Send me a PM and we'll get this conversation started! Sounds good, I'm in the same boat, but will continue working til we near 100%

UTF-8 for the most part.
Had to decrypt one of the file formats, but it was fairly simple.
People that worked on DQM:J2 for DS helped with that.

I see, I am looking at another game that has both plain text files, and some kind of custom format with possibly scrambled encoding. The files with pure English strings are easy to figure out, while those in Japanese are harder because I can't tell if it is derived from UTF or the older Shift JIS, and of course the character sets are much larger.

That would be a great idea, if I hadn't already thought of that and tried it!
I have the full DW7 PSX script dumped, and yes its in english.

The problem is its formatted completely different, and nothing lines up.
For instance, the DIALOG portion of DQ73DS, the very first file, is the very first story scene, and they are in different formats in different folders.
Everything is just mixed together with DW7 scripts, and I have yet to take the time to figure it out.

Additionally, there are new features and changes in this game that didnt exist in the other one, with extra dialog, new/missing characters.

Without the japanese script to somehow compare to, and that one doesnt like up with DW7 either, this idea ends up not being that great.
However we have it as a reference
Well yeah, you're going to have to adapt the script. Is this your first project?

If you have a good way to map a script I would love to hear it.
Considering they arent 1:1, I dont see how you could anticipate the gaps.

if it was that easy, square would have done it that way.

the psx version is in english somebody can traslate the 3ds game use the traslation of psx, is so dificult?

It is so difficult

Feel free to come up with the solution! ;)
I wont stop you.

if someday you need somebody to insert the traslate text count with me ;) . Im not understand so much japan but I love DQ saga :)

Check out romhacking dot net, there's some script handlers and formatters there that fan translators share around. I think Atlas was a great one--but it's gonna come down to personal preference.

Most translator groups or people end up making their own programs to facilitate the process.

You can also always just do it yourself, by hand.

China is full of gamers who do nothing but farm all day. They have more man power :)

yeah, we have worked on fans translating since 15 years ago(maybe earlier),
there are thousands of people doing this with no pay today,
we have to do that, or we'll play games in other langue which most of us haven't learnt...
