i have two ags 001 is there a way to just use one of them or is it better to find a 101?

AGS-101 is the one with the backlight, which is much better than the AGS-001 frontlight. This thread (and the adapter cables talked about) is for using the AGS-101 screen in an AGB-001 case.

I'd like to know the answer to this question as well... I've just completed building 32 pin and 40 pin systems this week.
The 32 pin screen on a 40 pin board looks like crap - plenty of ghosting. I didn't explore adding wires too much more, as I found that just pairing a 32 pin board & proper 32 pin ribbon cable adapter with a white-tabbed screen solved all the problems (without the use of additional wires).

Hello! I modded an 30pin gba with an ags-101 screen and everything works great with an awesome picture, My second attempt isnt going so well This time its an 40pin gba with an ags-101 screen. the image is way to white. and if i solder 103 to ground i get ghosting. Anyone?

Just did the mod with a 40 pin gba, this cable: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/400771955089, and a screen from a broken SP I had lying around, and I'm getting some ridiculous ghosting/burn in (if something's on the screen for 2 seconds, a faded image of it will stay for a minute or two). Can anybody help?

EDIT: Having read the rest of the thread, I realized that it's probably because I have a 40 pin board and type B screen. still, anybody have any advice?

just wanna say i recently finished my ags 101 mod and i had ghosting with blue/red colors spread around the screen as well. i took out the ribbon and put it back and it worked perfect, i must have put it in wrong at first.{squeezing the cable made the screen change brightness ghost effects as well}

Hi, I'm new here but hoping for some guidance.

I just did the mod with what I believe is a type A AGS-101 screen (brown tab) and a 40 pin solderless ribbon cable. It works and looks ok but I can tell the brightness level is less than the default brightness on my SP?

I'm not sure where I should solder to increase the brightness, I tried turning the POT wattage control by the GBA slot and there was no difference.

Edit: Also after playing around with it somemore I noticed the color seems slighty off, almost like a greenish color bleeding through, I wonder if this is some kind of interference from the ribbon touching the PCB possibly? Double edit: I fixed the color issue.

or should I order a new cable that has the P1 spot of the ribbon? Didn't know there was two type when I initially bought the first cable..

Since it seems like the supply of screens has dried up I'm happy that I was just able to snag a stand-alone AGS-101 screen off of Ebay for $40. It's the "AB" type with the black/brown connector and I plan on installing it into my 32-pin GBA. Are there any problems I should anticipate with that?

I've read this entire thread and no one has ever mentioned that there are issues plugging either type of screen ("AB" black/brown and "B" white) into either of the two motherboard types (32-pin and 40-pin). I ask because some of the sellers of the ribbons on Ebay are adamant that only one type of screen works with only one type of motherboard. Any truth to that? From my understanding it's only the type of motherboard that you need to be concerned with as that dictates what kind of ribbon you need.

As far as I know, all 32-pin adapters work for both AB and B screens, and 40-pin adapters are for AB screens unless specified otherwise.

Plugging a type B screen into a 40-pin board tends to cause problems (e.g. my ghosting problem above), but the type AB does not seem to cause problems with either type of board.

That's great news. I'm currently awaiting my 32-pin adapter ribbon from a seller in China and then I'll do the mod.

I'm also adding in the optional brightness switch that Rose Colored Gaming used to provide for. That is to say it's the switch that you install at the convenient location at the top of the GBA and not the one that's buried underneath the batteries in the battery compartment. I understand the trade off in that I won't be able to connect the GBA to the Gamecube (without some mods to the connector), but I never would have done that anyway.

It took a while to identify the switch that RCG used to sell, but I found it on Amazon being sold by uxcell. I ended up getting a slightly different switch sold by them that has "wings" on the side. That way I can bend them out and size them to make sure there's no horizontal movement once the switch is in its pocket.

Have you found ags 101 screens in agb 001s can only get as bright as the lower setting in its native hardware? I've been trying to find a way around this, and how to activate the "3rd setting"? on an ags 101 board, but I haven't turned up much yet.

At almost $35 each it's an expensive add-on. It may be worth it for some people, though. I'll live with the brightness you get without it.
