Aren't Wii U disks multi layer?
Even if you know where and how much to scratch, you'll make layer 2 unreadable too... and there's high probability that there's game data in that area...

I'm not talking about completely modifying a game. The update data is on it's own partition of the disc. By erasing that partition it might be possible to prevent updates (I'm not completely sure, would need an idea of how the update process happens from a disc). It might also be possible to simply overwrite that partition with an older firmware so that the Wii U will confirm that there is an update on the disc (preventing it from refusing to read a 'tampered with' disc) so it will not update.
Won't work, the game will check your system firmware, if it's lower than the provided by the disc it will take the firmware from the disc and update, but since it can't read that data because it was borked in the disc it simple will throw an error 'couldn't read disc' or something.

Speaking of disk scratching I used to play Halo 3 competitively. People hated the maps Isolation and Snowbound so much that they would scratch their disks so they would be unable to load the map and the game would be forced into using a different map.

I can't believe this has gone on for a whole PAGE. This WILL NOT WORK! The Wii U WILL make sure that every bit is properly signed. (We're not talking about the NES here, this is state-of-the-art security.) If the signature is bad it will crash. If the data is bad it will crash. The ONLY possible way to skip the update by scratching would be IF (and this is a big if) the Wii U skips the update if the signature validation fails. If that is the case (VERY likely not), then if the update partition were scratched, the Wii U would skip the update. Most likely it will just throw an error and NOT boot the game.

Let me repeat:
- There is a VERY low probability that this will work. It would require a really stupid bug. (Because of the Trucha bug, Nintendo will be extra careful.)
- I don't think that many people will risk $40 (or $60) games to test this highly inaccurate procedure.

Lol, I agree, if anyone noticed that devil emoticon and had a sense of sarcasm then it should have been apparent. Don't really try this. Or do and report back, roflmao.

One time.on an Xbox 360 site there were VERY technical discussions. Usually people fucked up their soldering, lifted a trace, a cap, etc. "Can this be fixed?" I was so irritated after a while I began to give crappy advice. I was not satisfied so I told a guy go "drill" into a chip and drop solder into the hole. The next step would be to solder a wire to a processor pin and that hole.

A mod was furious and told me he would ban me if I continued. I then used Google to translate a sentence into Russian to reply to the mod. I went to log in and realized I was banned. There was a nice message for me also when I tried to log on.

Anyway, this idea is totally reckless. Another few thoughts I had were kindly articulated by mn1. Please don't be silly. I almost convinced myself the person who brought up scratching a disc was trolling. Especially when somebody mentioned modifying an ISO. Smh....

Mr. Mysterio, sometimes you need to let people stick their hand into the fire so they learn. In certain moods I laugh watching idiot skaters and others mess themselves up. Lol, if anyone does try this, be sure to post pictures of the disc and the Wii U screen. I can't stop laughing, sorry.

I realize that some idiots will not listen to people. However, if someone does end up ruining their expensive game because of bad advice and I knew it was bad advice but didn't post my concerns, I would feel terrible.

PS: LOL about the drilling into a chip.
