Do the 3DS and New 3DS have different screen resolutions?

I'm not talking about size here, The 3DS and 3DSXL have different screen sizes, but I'm assuming the same resolution since it just looks upscaled and stretched and IMO crappy.

The reason I ask, why in the hell would Nintendo bring out a 'NEW' console if they weren't intending on a Higher resolution screen for the more processor hungry games? Should be something that parents can distingush as something new rather than an upgrade if that's what Nintendo are aiming for.

I can't help but feel that Sony did so well with their handheld on the first release of them. The Vita is such a monster with it's great display, capacitive multi point touch screen and various other higher quality things. Nintendo seem to be on a constant release spree trying to give addition hardware which will be necessary in future when new games we want are released... :( Even removing features from WiiU Smash because of the limitations of the 3DS version.

Went off on a tangent there, but thanks guys if you can help me out!:)

It's not terrible. Despite the name it's not a new system, it's a new model of an existing system. Upping the resolution would be a bad thing, as 3DS games would look slightly worse for the sake of slightly better resolution on the 1-2 games that are actually only playable on the New.

Vita has better hardware yes but the housing scratches to hell very easy compared to a 3DS and let's not forget the 3DS actually has good AAA console style games. I have had a vita since 1 week prior to launch since I preordered and it has been used very little, even tho I purchase all the major releases but the vita has turned into a low budget indie handheld which is fine but not my taste.... Sony has all but killed the vita, they stopped all development on Near/youtube/maps apps and all AAA Console style games Sony was making. They cancelled a infamous and another uncharted game, if they released one of those then I would of been happy spending this money but as it is now the vita was a huge waste of money. Here's hoping I can hack it one day and play roms as most of the games aren't worth 1$ or more then 10 minutes of messing around.

The new 3ds isn't their new handheld, it's just a stop gap. Nintendo would of never released their next gen handheld now just 4 years since the 3ds launched with its decent sales even to this day, and with the release of the new 3ds selling so well, I wouldn't be surprised if the release of their next gen handheld gets pushed a year or two, as I was expecting it next year but not anymore.

The new 3ds xI a great peice of hardware, so much so I cnt bring myself to play my old 3ds/3ds xl without super stable 3D.

There is a reason I own a 3DS - 3DS XL & a Majoras Mask New 3DS XL, it's because Nintendo is king of handheld gaming, not because of their handheld but because of their amazing games.

The issue is simple, compatibility.

Yes, in theory it is possible to create a higher resolution mode, and then when a game detects the unit as a New 3DS, then it will use the extended resolution. Just as certain upcoming games will also use the increase processing power of the New 3DS.

But as clones of the GBA will show (Bad example, but the nearest I can think of), this actually causes some problems. Most GBA clones actually have a higher resolution than the real GBA, causing certain problems in specific games, usually just bad image quality (Due to scaling) but sometimes it causes somewhat major visual wierdness because certain games use the limitations of the system to create "effects" and thus with higher resolution ruins the effect. For example a stripe effect. Any stretches in resolution totally ruins the effect.

This is a non-issue, as they could simply double the resolution from 400x240 to 800x480 (or triple if they want) and scale old 3DS games by 2x.

The 3DS won't be able to take it. Then on 3D mode it will be virtually 1600x480. That's even higher pixel density wise than 720p. Even on the current resolution, turning 3D mode effectively halves the framerate in certain games.
