I already got a some advice on this, but I still wanna double check. I just got my refurbished 3DS XL, and it has 8.1 system version. I wanna use Gateway sometime in the future, so it's imperative I don't update to the latest version. I have a retail cart of Pokemon Omega Ruby that I would like to use online for battling/trading. Can I do this safely without triggering an update? I have already switched on Parental control (but no actual restrictions), and haven't even accepted the TOS that keeps showing up.

Also, how to game updates and DLC work? AFAIK they need the eShop to download. Does that mean that updates are not possible?

You will need the latest patch to play online. To download that, you will need access to the eShop, which means updating to the latest firmware. Once Gateway releases their update, you could simply install a CIA of that patch instead.

Yes, you have to update, to use the online features of Pokemon ORAS, you need to install the game update from the eshop, and in order to enter the eshop, you have to update.

You should wait for gateway to release their update and then check if you can install the Pokemon ORAS update safely.

And this CIA update works with retails carts too, right?

I don't understand these kind of questions. I thought we could update the emuNAND to whatever is available as long as the sysNAND is untouched?

Just throwing that out there as general knowledge, I'm on 9.2 and I can still play online just fine.
No eShop though, I haven't clicked on it since 9.3 came out. I haven't even got the "Update" popup. Yet.

But are you talking about This particular game? More importantly, did you update the game while you could?

Yes, both retail Omega Ruby and Smash Bros work fine. But I already had all the latest necessary title updates from the eShop.
So far, I don't think simply enabling Wi-Fi downloads firmware updates in the background, you might need to do something to trigger it, like trying to access the eShop. Or I've just been lucky.

Err I'm not sure to be honest. Seeing as DLC won't work with retail carts, then perhaps not. Not sure myself though, I think I'll let someone who actually has a 4.5 3DS and a Gateway to answer that one.

Really? DLC doesn't work with retails carts?
This Gateway is starting to look like more trouble than it's worth ...

You can always rip your own games... That's what I'm planning to do.
I'd just like to find a clear way to backup my save games as well. I've read it's not possible for all games

This is my plan as well once my N3DS arrives, just rip all my games to .cia or .3ds and transfer over to my N3DS.

Haha, you're not doing much to dispell my doubts...

Maybe I should just switch to Sky3DS... the latest versions allow rewriting the roms on the cart, right? I don't think I'm ever gonna need more than 10 games at once.
