My N3ds should be arrives tomorrow :grog: if they release the new update
Tomorrow that's gonna be awesome :toot:

Can you only install .cia files to the system? .nds can only be run from the Gateway? Can you convert .nds to .cia? or do i need to get 2 copies of each one, one in cia and one in nds?

  • Yes, or rather to the EmuNAND.
  • Yes.
  • You can. Just google ".3ds to .cia conversion".
  • No. You don't need both.

So, if you install a cia file, can these be played without using the gateway 3ds?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this. :shy:

You install it on the emunand, so gateway is needed. But the card does not need to be inserted after installing.

.3ds files act like game cartridges. Gateway saves their saves to the sd card as <titleid>.sav.
.cia files are like installers for on-NAND games. I think their saves get saved to NAND, but I'm not sure.

SaveDataFiler can extract and inject saves for at least .cia games. I'm not sure if it works for .3ds games.
There's also Save Data Transfer Tool from eShop, which can transfer from cartridge to NAND.

You need to have the Gateway card inserted when you start "Gateway mode". In this mode, you can play the games on the Gateway card, as well as games installed to NAND. I don't think you need the Gateway inserted to start a game installed on NAND, as long as you are in Gateway mode.

You also need the Gateway card inserted to start "Classic mode", which is used to play retail games without requiring an update and with region-free. In order to avoid updates, you need to install Emunand, which is a copy of the system nand. It gets loaded from your SD card. You can update it when Gateway says it's safe.

That's just an overview. It's also only how things used to work, not necessarily how they will continue to work when the update comes out.

And don't forget all of this are about the previous exploit

There's EmuNand in the new exploit or not

Nothing new, but here's an email i got from GW

Like the reseller said yesterday.

2Hack you lie... it's ... crazy :o

Nice, thanks for all the help. :)

Wait... You meant .3ds and not .nds, right? Because I was pretty sure you meant .3ds. If you meant .nds, those would be DS-specific roms and Gateway would be rather moot (unless you meant the blue card, and that's just an R4-like card).

Changing there answer again, it's now around new year  . I thought they said before 2015. Are they pushing the release date ?

Anyone else getting the feeling that we are just being trolled? It was pretty similar with WiiKey team, promises then bam they are gone... no release nothing.

I've probably said this like 3 times but earlier we got internal estimations, not official cutoff dates, now that the FW is finished and they're finalizing everything else they actually know when they'll be able to get it out by and are giving us a concrete date.
Needless to say, don't freak out unless it's still not here on jan 5th.
