No I don't think Nintendo is that stupid to ignore the huge install base on the old 3DS for the time being however looking into the future the will be many games that are going to be New 3DS enhanced that look graphically better on the New 3DS with extra features and no hit on performance when 3D is turned on (thanks to the GPU core speed on the New 3DS being double that of the old 3DS, which I believe is true just not yet confirmed).

Think of it like this, the old 3DS will be like what a 2DS is right now once developers start making New 3DS enhanced games that not only looks better in 2D but will also have better effects in 3D while retaining the same performance with 3D turned on. Meanwhile these New 3DS enhanced games on the old 3DS will not look as good and will probably take a performance hit with the 3D turned on, it's not like a lot of old 3DS users use the 3D anyways since it's nowhere as good as the face tracking 3D from any angle on the New 3DS. Which in turn essentially tuns the old 3DS into a 2DS because not many old 3DS users will be turning on the 3D due to the weird angle it needs to be held at for 3D to work and the performance hit on newer games that are New 3DS enhanced.

tl;dr

3DS -> 2DS because 3D not worth it with crappy viewing angle
N3DS -> new 3DS because better insides and 3D worth it because revised viewing angle.

I think the 3D effect enhances the games, and I always leave it on in my 3DS XL. Not sure if you can say most of the people play games in 2D only.

By the way, I'm not sure if they want to create a lot of N3DS exclusives. Would be awful for the brand as a whole if they supported strongly the old 3DS for 3 years only.

There will be some New 3DS exclusives but not nearly as much as New 3DS enhanced games, meaning these enhanced version will still play on the old 3DS pretty much the same way as they would on the New 3DS just the playing them on the New 3DS would be better and probably the way the developers intended for them to be played.

No one is saying Nintendo is going to abandon old 3DS users they are just going to make games that supports and takes advantages of both the old and new 3DS that way they'll still cater to the old 3DS audience while at the same time be able to sell New 3DS consoles like hot cakes...do you really think anyone in their right mind would buy a more expensive New 3DS over a cheaper old 3DS if there were no enhanced games for it and all future games played the same (these same people would question why Nintendo doesn't just keep the old 3DS on the market and just drop the price).

Think of it as a computer, it you've got an older machine that is slower you'll still be able to play the game just well you'll have to put down the graphics options to medium and when you turn on 3D there maybe a bit of slowdown plus you have to be square centered to the monitor for the 3D to work but still nothing that really takes away from the game experience as a whole, where as on your friends new and faster computer he gets to play it on high graphics settings and has no performance or viewing angle issues when turning on 3D.

What do you see becoming the norm for the N3DS? 60fps?
what about resolution? same at 240 or do you think Nintendo can push that higher but at 30fps instead?

For N3DS enhance games, devs should be using those extra cores for higher frame rate. With double the RAM there's so much you do that you can't on the old 3DS, 256MB is massive for a weak console like the 3DS, assuming 192MB was available to game, incredible.

RE: Revelations was made do with 64MB RAM on the 3DS, it looked absolutely stunning on the system, now imagine Capcom had 192MB of RAM to work with, two more CPU cores and the extra cache.

The resolution is the same on N3DS, 240P. Nevertheless you should be able to bump the visuals up a notch over the old 3DS if devs play their cards right. VRAM got some improvement as well.

After reading all this, I have a doubt, Nintendo will ever release a handheld with HD capabilities? Looks like they are treating the N3DS like the new handheld and kinda worries me, I'd love to see games like Pokemon ORAS, Ace Attorney, Codename Steam etc. In glorious HD. But with this N3DS looks like Nintendo will be a little late to that party (again)

Sorry for the offtopic

I really wouldn't mind Twilight Princess ported to the New 3DS, Super Mario Sunshine I could care less about.

I'd like to see Okami and Punch-Out! ported too but that's just wishful thinking.

i hope the n3ds fails. I really don't care for it. I bought my 3ds xl last year and I'm not gonna buy a new nintendo handheld just 1 year later. I'll wait till their next gen HDS type of successor (presumably this will be backwards compatible with 3ds/n3ds games) is released than play with this generations dsi system.

It will come eventually, my take is 2018 at the earliest and graphics/resolution is going to look like what you see on the Wii U gamepad when playing Wii U games heck the screen size might even be the same size for the XL models.

Edit:

New 3DS can't fail because slowly Nintendo is going to phase out the old 3DS off the market heck the XL models of the old 3DS are not in production anymore in Japan.

If you're wishing for the New 3DS too fail then you're basically wishing for the 3DS to fail as whole old and new because they will have mostly the same games.

no way not 2018, that's way too long with how mobile platforms are advancing in their capabilities. fall/winter 2016 is more likely.

That's wishful thinking when has Nintendo ever released a handheld two years ahead of the competition?

The Vita was released in 2012 and will have a 6 year lifespan at the very least.

lel the vita is a failure, i don't think it's a standard of comparison here. The 3ds has a good run, and two more years is sure to bring even more good games. Even the ds had high profile games like pokemon black/white 2 released 1 year after the 3ds came out, so it seems probable that the 3ds library will be supported with major titles for at least 3 more years if the successor is released in 2016.

So was the PSP why oh why didn't the 3DS come out in say 2010 or even better 2009 to catchup with the competition exactly there is none so they don't really have to rush they just have to keep things fresh and not loose the interest of their installed and future potential customers.

BTW you don't have to quote me all the time nothing is set in stone, IMHO the earliest possible release for a new HD Nintendo handheld is in 2017 but my bet is in late 2017 or early 2018.

I'd like to see remakes of Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission if Nintendo does not plan on making a new Metroid for the 3DS, perhaps even the first two Golden Sun remakes would be nice on the 3DS.

A port of F-Zero GX or GP Legend would be great. Just F-Zero in general would be wonderful really. Also, I don't believe we will see a new handheld for at least another 3, 4 years. Nintendo still has tons of cash from the Wii Era so they'll be fine. the 3DS is doing really well after a slow start and traditionally they've tried to extend system lifespans as much as possible, because it creates consumer and developer trust in the platform. It's win-win really.

They could even survive an early next-gen sony handheld launch. Though I don't expect sony to, as the Vita was developed in tandem with the PS4(Source: a SCEE Hardware engineer who held a technical talk at my gamedev uni), and will probably be either killed, or be kept alive until the next gen consoles (After PS4) are close to being finished

Totally agree Gamecube ports are always good in 3D especially rare ones like Skies on Arcadia Legends in 3D and F-Zero GX which is the last known full console F-Zero game but then again I wouldn't mind F-Zero: Maximum Velocity either remade with shining new graphics engine with 3D effects and some new tracks.

Edit:

I'd kill two native Indians (jokes) if Capcom were to port, remake or release a new Power Stone on the 3DS with online play. As a port I'd take the PSP's version on Power Stone Collection with WiFi play on the 3DS, as a remake it'll have to be Power Stone 2 with a new shinning graphics engine and WiFi online and as a brand new sequel I'd probably jizz my pants upon announcement if it were made exclusively only for the 3DS (new enhanced and old).

The game clearly would fit Nintendo audiences really well wonder why Capcom never thought about a port, remake or sequel for the Wii/3DS with online play, my lost but their free money printing machine.

Mario Sunshine might be possible but Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, ergh...NO!!! That's never going to happen, lets be realistic, Wii Games on a 3DS handheld that has had a bit of a tweak here and there! Mind you if they did do Mario Sunshine I would be sold on a New 3DS for sure, shame we didn't know 100% for sure though???

honestly I'm pretty sure that chart is inaccurate especially the future games thing.. but at any rate. I personality don't think much will come of the more powerful hardware, its not a new generation device its more of a refresh.. its nice that games load quicker and that some games will has a few more graphic features up its sleeve but other than that. The best thing for me in the new hardware is the updated 3d effect.. lets admit it most of us now have the 3d feature turned off all the time.. but with this new hardware update , most of us would probably leave it on

Totally agree even though some people are put off by the idea there's a New 3DS these are usually old 3DS owner's who just recently bought one.

If Nintendo were to do this refresh upgrading hardware idea back when they released the motion plus for the Wii, the Wii might have turned out a bit different with enhanced games since developers like Mistwalker who made the Last Story could really have used extra power on the Wii (they were restricted with the Wii's power).

Does look questionable on the CPU since it's been confirmed the New 3DS's CPU has the same clock speed just two extra cores and for the RAM I've not heard anything yet but double the ram of the old 3DS does sound correct to me.

And I've been suspecting that the GPU on the New 3DS has a faster core clock and the VRAM increased to 10MB which has been pretty much confirmed, this looks pretty legit.

Perhaps Nintendo chose to go quad core instead of increasing the core clock on the a dual core which is not as good overall for both games, the OS and multitasking.

And the last thing is Twilight Princess sounds questionable since Majora's Mask remake is already in development but if true this means the 3DS will eventually get 5 Zelda games in it's lifetime (2 remakes, 1 port and 2 exclusives) which is pretty awesome.

Nah, still looks pretty fake. The GPU clock of the original 3DS speed has pretty much been confirmed at 268Mhz not 133Mhz. So there can't and increase to 266Mhz unless its way higher than that.
