[...] consumers at the end of the day drive the market and at this very stage sky is king. A piece of shit king, but king non the less.

May I kindly ask why you insult the Sky team? I'm quite new to the scene, and on top of that I seem to have arrived at the worst time possible, but for me as a newbie I cannot say why sky should be shitty and GW not. As I learned about the two, I simply went for the one that guaranteed more benefits for my side, so I went with sky as they clearly have the bigger advantage right now.

If you try to see the whole situation through someone's eyes that is completely new, it is impossible to convince someone like me to wait for the promised update. And I don't think this is an opinion, I rather think that is how the average person is sold basically. And with lots of people buying New 3DS, they are most likely drawn to Sky rather than GW.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, like I said, I have dealt with that matter no longer than a week.

People have issues due to mostly speculated reasons on why, on their first flashcards, Sky3DS imposed a ten game limit. Some call them greedy, others call them downright dumb as it was the work of one user (not from around here) that figured out how to break said limit.

Adding insult to injury (in many POV's), Sky3DS now releases another cart with a blue button (the former was red) that comes right out of the box without that limitation. Users who are stuck with the Red-Button version have to use a program (by said person I mentioned before) to patch their ROMs before loading them up.

It's an all out war between those who defend Gateway and those who defend Sky3DS. Some of us are neutral though.

Realistically, to the end user that really doesn't care at all about eShop dumps, region-free gaming or .CIA installations, Sky3DS works like a charm (seems to be having issues with some MicroSD's though, but that's another thing).

On the other hand, Gateway has been promising since November 14th to nearly everyone out there. They haven't delivered, instead relying on soon.

I myself support Gateway (as I already bought a cart from them) and I don't agree with the price imposed by Sky3DS's cart. I also value region-free and eShop dumps.

It will all boil down to your priorities. In your case, since you're german*, if you want to play Shin Megami Tensei IV, you can't. That's because in Europe it was only launched in eShop. If you want to play Conception II, you can't either - eShop only release.

That's why I'm holding out for Gateway and consider it the superior product despite no release out at the moment. Their promises are bold and their track record is slightly-dirty.

Edit: *if you have an USA 3DS, that changes things though. Sky3DS is limited to the console's region.

Thank you for that post, I learned a lot from your words.
So, in my individual case, all I actually wanted was to play some games on the 3ds that I already own on Wii U. I'm not that much into homebrew, since I have it installed on my Wii U and still don't know what exactly I could do with it. (I still haven't figured out if I can install wad games without breaking the vwii, so I eventually gave up the homebrew matter, maybe I'm too stupid... who knows?) I got the Wii U connected to the same TV set with which my computer is connected, so it makes far more sense using Dolphin that can deliver 1080p than USB loaders and such... but of course that is a different matter.
Back to topic.
The New 3DS, I first looked at the games I wanted to play. As of today, I count 7. Then I ordered the New 3DS for Australia since they use PAL as well as Europe. I read that sky3ds could play 10 games, great, I thought, even three more than I need. Decision made.
I also want to play the occasional virtual console title, like Donkey Kong for Game Boy since I owned that as a kid and thought that would be nice. Do I understand you correctly that I cannot play Virtual Console titles with the Sky Card?

If Nintendo charges me 8 Euros for the VC title, OK, that I will spend.
And another thing is, at least here in Germany, both cards come basically at the same price. The sky is 8 Euros more expensive. One pizza less, I thought to myself.

I also considered playing my 7 games and if some time will have passed, then, maybe, GateWay will have their update finished and I could get that as well, instead of investing in another Sky card...

The only problem with Sky3DS is that you can't be certain that it won't be patched. I mean sure now 9.4 sky still works but what about 9.5? 9.6? that's the whole argument in essence.

The fact that no matter what, it's a risky investment because you never know when Sky3DS will be patched and when it IS patched you don't know if all you need to do is update software or shell out another 100 Euros for an updated Sky3DS.

It all boils down to what you get for your money. both Gateway and Sky3DS has the potential to last longer but as of now, Gateway has the lead because what you get is tangible proof that they're working on something. Sky3DS on the other hand has no proof that they will even continue support if/when their cart gets blocked.

There's plenty of stuff out there I bet that could help you out with the whole .wads thing. It's a messy subject, but perserverance is key ;)

Yup, although if you check Sky3DS's website, they misleadingly tell you it's possible to play eShop dumps on it. It is not possible (at least, no one has come out to say otherwise, read GBATemp's review on Sky3DS if you're wondering ;) Even though that one features the red-button one, but differences shouldn't be abismal).

You do have the pro that Sky3DS doesn't tamper with your 3DS, so you can safely go to the EU eShop, play online (but you'd have to dig a bit more on this) and buy said VC titles. In fact, they're most of the times cheaper than 8€. Watch out for sales too! :)

Another thing. If you plan to buy Gateway in the long run, don't update for safety measures. At the moment, no cartridge based game requires 9.x firmware to run, yet you'd always need the latest firmware to acess the eShop, so there's that. A question of priorities, as I mentioned. :)

I won't offer you my opinion, as that'd be biased, so I'll leave it up to you to make the right decision based on your current needs.

Edit: And.. Yeah.. As the guy above said, we'll never know what will happen if Nintendo manages to block Sky3DS. If it does, I'm almost sure they'll dump another, updated cart and hope you pay the same price back. With Gateway that doesn't happen. They've been supporting the same cart since they started, due to their ingenious design.

On another forum that I regularly visit they say you need an emulated NAND to play games that require fm higher than 4.5, and that in fact the updated version of Gateway does not allow for an emulated NAND anymore, so that would mean no future games can be played. What is the saying about that subject on these forums?
And another thing is, thank you for your advice not to update to fm 9.x Phantom_User, but the 3ds that I own came with fw 9.0.20 preinstalled. I understand correctly that you cannot downgrade, right? If it were that easy, the whole discussion wouldn't make any sense at all.

But it seems like right now you have but two possibilities, of which either have their pros and cons. Thank you for your explanation and advice, it was very objective.

Well, for users in 4.5 FW they indeed need emuNAND to play higher FW games.
Current version of Gateway is speculated to not have emuNAND. All because in their latest video there was no GW behind FW version in System Options. This could very well be the reason for their delay. They're trying to cram it in as a last minute feature.

On the other hand, unless you desperately need to acess the eShop, there's no real reason for emuNAND right now. No game has a firmware above 8.1. And their claimed support goes up to 9.2. And you don't need emuNAND to play online.

You're welcome, I may have worded myself wrong, but you're free to stay (which I hope you do! :P ) on that version. Gateway will support YOUR version, 9.1J (Japanese specific) and 9.2 for the rest of the world. :)

What I probably meant by before is that, if Gateway finds out they can't support 9.3 (they haven't commented on 9.4 yet) they'll revert their attention to users with 8.1 (again, this is speculated, they never said 8.1 specifically, only firmwares lower than 9.0 but it is the talk of everyone here).

Don't worry about it, any time bro! :)

The reason we have gateway fans VS sky3DS fans war is because there's nothing to until gateway releases their update.

point blank, when your drinking vodka and playing pokemon pirated on a handheld nintendo console who the F**K cares what cart you have they both let u play games for free which is why they were invented regardless of what anyone says...

50% of flascart users say they use it to pirate add 20% for the ones who say they dont use it to pirate thats 70% of flashcart users that use the cart for its intended purpous, which is why they will always be the same crappy piece of plastic and fiberglass that lets you play games for free so stop your bitching and just be grateful you have a choice.

The only thing sky3ds has on gateway is it's simpler.. Other than that gateway is infinitely better. Anybody that argues otherwise is foolish. How on earth is something more expensive and have way less features better????? I don't understand that logic...

And the fact that it's available right now, and works on current firmwares. You need to take people's impatience into consideration. What if they want to send a gift for the holidays or just want to have a few games secured on their console?

I wouldn't be surprised if Gateway releases their offering as soon as Sky3DS gets blocked.

they both do the same thing they were made to do right? play dumped games. who gives a crap about features other than they play the software they were intended to. if you favor one over the other anything extra is brand favoring and is irrelevant when it comes down it the basics do sky3ds carts play backups? yes does gateway? yes. so stop acting like gateway is the mighty lord of flash cards because most people forget that sky is emulating a retail cart, gateway is not they shouldn't be compared to begin with.

Man honestly the only reason why i didn't decide to buy Sky3DS was because of the shitty transformers label. I couldn't care less about which one is better at this point, I just want to play some games.

So because you don't have an opinion or preference on a subject, those that do and defend it are idiots?
It's not that, it's that it's pointless to argue. Chances are, people aren't going to change each other's minds by smashing the keyboard at each other. People already know the advantages of each and have already chosen their preference. Honestly, when it comes down to it, we shouldn't even be debating it, instead we should be picking apart the new firmware to see what all has really changed. It just seems like a silly little detail to worry about when ultimately we have similar goals. Instead, people are yelling at walls. Which is fine with by me, it's a bit of entertainment when I visit. Though it does get old after a while.
