now with my new gc adapter it's taking up both ports on the front, my west digital hdd takes up the 2 on the back now there's no room for the lan adapter to plug into. i have to keep unplug the hdd and plug the adapter in to use it. i need a hub that works and hopefully doesn't need a wall socket plug because i absolutely have none left. prefer ones i can buy locally (Australia)

will any work or are there some that won't?

So you're asking for a USB hub with battery power? I don't know of anything like that in existence, I just found some threads online where people wanted to construct that themselves. You'd need to keep charging / replacing batteries for the hub, though.

Are there no y splitter cables* or socket doublers around you?

*depending upon where you are in the world these can be frowned upon, however China exists and will often fab up whatever you want so check ebay and places with slightly less tight regulations. I know nothing of Australian electric regs though and have not done any purchasing for that part of the world so you are on your own there.

None of those are what the OP is looking for. "i need a hub that works and hopefully doesn't need a wall socket plug because i absolutely have none left." Exactly which ones of the USB hubs on there do NOT require a wall socket? Zero. I looked through all of them. There is no battery powered USB hub, which is what the OP initially wanted before discovering the secondary (gray) USB cable for the GameCube controller adapter is for the rumble function and thus not necessary.

This was on the list. External power is optional.

I don't think you understand what that means. OP's situation is that he didn't have any USB ports left on the Wii U. These are ports that are powered by the Wii U itself. If you connect a USB hub without external power, you also reduce the amount of power the USB ports on the hub will receive from the Wii U. OP has connected devices that require power, such as an external HDD that takes two USB ports because one is not enough for the amount of power the HDD needs to consume. An Ethernet/LAN adapter is never advisable to connect through a hub, either. Even the GameCube controller adapter takes two USB ports because the rumble function requires additional power to drive the motors in GameCube controllers. What I mean to say is that OP's connected devices are NOT candidates to be connected through an unpowered hub, which what you have linked is exactly that. A USB hub with external power, that is a USB hub that also has a plug to a wall socket will take power from the mains. Any USB devices connected to such a powered hub will not be restricted by the amount of power the Wii U itself can deliver, because they will be powered directly from the wall socket.
