GW never had a 10 game limit .... just a 1 game per sd limit before there was multirom, but that's an old story of the past

1. Buy JPN New 3DS and hope this new version of Gateway makes it region-free.
2. Wait for USA N3DS that may not be exploitable firmware.

What do you guys think? I'm pretty pissed with Sky3DS because I bet Gateway had a new exploit figured out for a while, and the new guys at Sky3DS figured it out and blew their load before the New 3DS made it to North American markets.

This new direct boot method seems to be exclusive to 9.x FW, since Sky3DS doesn't work with lower firmware revisions (...)

And who told you that? It works just fine on old firmware.

Or option 3 - get an australian device which will be EU-region. That way you can get english games even if they can't get it region-free.

That's some sound advice. Thanks! I'll keep play-asia bookmarked, but I might wait a little bit longer in case any limited editions are announced.

don't forget ssspwn is suppose to be able to allow region free.....it wouldn't surprise me if gateway have ssspwn style exploit+sky3ds style compatibility to allow the old card to work, having a multirom menu and allowing region free....still not as featured as the original but the fact they said they don't want to confirm features just yet suggest its not going to be the same as 4.x...but does suggest there will at least be some of the features they are probably trying to figure out how much elbow room they have in userland

I highly doubt that:

1. You can run homebrew on it
2. You can use a fancy menu and all
3. EmuNAND will be supported

If they cloned Sky3DS's loading method, then none of the above will be supported.

If you don't have a 4.5 3ds you should wait, it might be a different card that works on a 9.2 3ds. I'm not sure what they mean when they say it's an update to the current cart, could still be an entirely new cart.

The Gateway blue card is really a DS card used to install the exploit for use by the 3DS card. And I'm pretty sure that as a DS card it doesn't work on 9.x firmware. So it would be impossible for Gateway to work on 9.x firmware with no change to hardware; they'd have to at least include a newer DS card, or tell the customers who already have a DS card to use that.

unless the entry point is totally different and does not even require DS more at all

And yes "blue card" is blocked, it is "just" a basic R4 clone.
Heard it was blocked from 6.x or 7.x now...

You can just use it to pirate the game ssspwn uses and bam, free homebrew.
