I made a topic not too long ago that was a bit confusing. Some people weren't absolutely sure what I wanted, so instead I thought to make this topic and ask the question in more general terms.

I want to transfer (encrypted) SD card data from my 4.2 firmware 3DS XL to my 3DS XL that has the latest firmware. It's as simple as that.
Is something like this possible in any way? Maybe with system transfer and then reverting it partially or something, I don't know. I'm hoping someone has tried something like this before and succeeded.

Hmm... Okay, let's put it a different way. Do people know exactly what happens when you do a system transfer?
Will I be able to restore my 4.2 3DS to normal if I do that? Will there be any adverse effects for my 9.0 3DS?

Everything is going to be OK for your 9.0 3DS and the 4.2 3DS will lose all of its data. You still have to manually swap SD contents though.

Please don't double-post.

When you perform a complete system transfer, both systems connect to Nintendo's servers and you effectively re-download the content on the machine you're transferring to while simultaneously deleting the content from the original system.

Will the EmuNAND portion lose all of its data or the SysNAND? Because the former is fine, since I can easily restore that. The latter is less fine.

Not one to question reporters, but come on. There was more than 24 hours between my posts, and it was a completely separate point meriting its own post. If I hadn't made a new post (and instead made it an addition to the original post), this thread would still be on a page where nobody would ever look and respond. In fact... The fact that both you and kyogre123 responded proves the merit of this second post. Please don't tell me that a second post wasn't justified under these conditions.

And thank you for the information. Does this mean that my 4.2 3DS will be updated if I do a system transfer?

Yes, it does, mean that it will be updated. It doesn't matter if 24 hours or 24 days have passed since your post, you're still double-posting. If you have additional information to add, use the Edit button. This is not me being picky, this is me telling you what the rules are.

Well, dang. Just to make sure, you're talking about the SysNAND being updated, right?

As per the rules, I'll continue this discussion in PM.

if you have a gateway card you can do the system transfer in 9.1 emunand and sysnand will be safe
Really!? So, let theoretically this should work:

1. Update my EmuNAND
2. Backup my EmuNAND
3. Do a system transfer from my 'hacked' 3DS to my legit 3DS
4. Restore my EmuNAND

Would this properly transfer the SD card contents from my 'hacked' 3DS to my legit 3DS without losing anything on either system? (Thinking about Miis, downloaded games/apps.)

I don't *think* you can do it twice in a row since the information does go through Nintendo's servers, but I haven't checked that. Since Gateway allows you to emulate NAND, it's an effective work-around against having to be on the latest firmware. :P

yeah but the games are only duped as long as you stay offline (you would also need to backup your SD contents too).....they will never be classed as legit any any accessing eshop or trying to do another system transfer will wipe them....im not sure if just being connected to the internet will delete them from the system even

Makes sense. After all, eShop games can only be tied to one system - as soon as they're off the server-side list, they get wiped. I've heard about that happening when people abused Nintendo promotions and all of a sudden their free games were disappearing a while back.

Hmm, I do not have any paid games on my EmuNAND, though. Only game updates. Those are easily redownloaded permanently.
I am just afraid I will lose paid games on my legit 3DS or Miis or progress of any kind.

Also, would I have to copy over SD card content or is that transferred automatically? (The content I am talking about does not come from the eShop, but from a game.)

I think SD content has to be copy-pasted manually.
Do you or anyone else know if this will work? Please note that copy-pasting the SD card data manually without a system transfer will result in a message that the data is corrupt. (It's probably encrypted with the console-unique key?)
If I do a system transfer, would I be able to copy-paste the SD card data and NOT get this error message? Wouldn't the SD card data still be encrypted with the previous 3DS's unique key, thus making it unable for the other 3DS to decrypt and read it?

I performed an emuNAND1 -> emuNAND2 system transfer several days ago.
All the steps are STRICTLY followed by the "HOW TO" post about Legit -> emuNAND in this board.

You should only notice that:
Before you click the button to FORMAT your SOURCE CONSOLE, TAKE OUT the SOURCE SD card.

I also restored an emuNAND1's backup into Source SD.
All the DL contents (patches, DLCs, 3DSwares) worked even you did any network connection EXCEPT E-SHOP LOG-IN.
That means, only e-shop log-in will vanish your digital duplication from restoring source console's emuNAND backup.

I just read this about system transfers:
"If the target 3DS has an NNID, you will have to format (removing all data) on the target 3DS."
The target 3DS (that being my legit 3DS) actually does have an NNID. So, does this mean I'll need to format everything on my legit 3DS, and thus losing all saves, Miis and downloaded games (which I presume can be redownloaded)?

Yes.
Unless you do a system transfer from Target to Source.

If both Source and Target have NNID, you have to sacrifice either of them.
That means there's no way to merge 2 NNIDs' data.
