Hey guys,

in another thread I asked if I should get an NDS or 3DS, but when I saw a Vita in great condition with a 16 GB Memory Card for 50 quid, I just had to snipe it, if only to re-sell it for a profit.

So now I was wondering if I should keep it and if so, which games I should get.
I always played Nintendo games, and my only consoles were an SNES and a GBA.

So here's what I'm asking you guys:

1. How do I find out if my Vita is 'hackable'?
2. If it is indeed hackable, is there a hassle-free way to get an SNES-emulator running?
3. Can I just drag and drop files onto the Vita via USB or is there an annoying proprietary file system?
4. What are some of the Vita games I should play? The IGN Top 25 is full of Japanese turn based RPGs which aren't really my style.
5. I mostly played Nintendo exclusives, like Donkey Kong Country, Mario and Zelda, but also PC games like Morrowind, Skyrim and Diablo. Is there an open world type RPG like Morrowind on the Vita?

That's it so far, cheers guys!

Get Persona 4 The Golden, it's one of the best games in years. Great RPG with social mechanics where you get to know the people in your party and they actually become more useful as you make bonds with them. Your main character will also grow stronger if you spend time with many people. Other recommendations are: Tearaway, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Little Big Planet and Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma.

1. Depends on your firmware. If it's below 3.18 it's generally hackable. Though only the PSP mode is hacked at the moment.

2. Once you've hacked it it's pretty easy to get homebrews on it. Though the SNES emulator is a little hit and miss, some games work and some are pretty laggy and almost unplayable. Retroarch should soon drop for PSP though, so maybe that will improve compability.

3. No, you need to use Sony's Content Manager Assistant, though if you hack you can work around it by using FTP.

4. I really beg you to give Persona 4 The Golden a chance, many of my friends who don't like JRPGs have gotten really interested in the genre after they played this amazing game.

5. The closest you will get to an experience like Morrowind is Borderlands 2 I think. It's a great game, though I haven't tried the Vita version yet.

I recommend you to visit my thread to read more on how Vita hacking works: http://gbatemp.net/threads/playstation-vita-hacking-news-overview-faq.341851/

Firstly:

1. There aren't any Vita hacks but hacks of PSP mode. It only gives you access to PSP mode so you won't be able to make utilise the Vita's power. Even than PSP mode is limited to a fully hacked PSP. It involves have a certain gaem to exploit and hacking PSP mode. IIRC there's a hack for the latest firmware. It's best to read up on Woloo for the whole set up. Sony are nominally pretty quick at fixing holes.
2. Read above.
3. The latter, Content Manager. It is shit.
4. Persona 4G, the Danganronpa gaems, Tearaway, Killzone, Muramasa, VLR, Hotline Mimami, Velocity Ultra and 2X, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Dokuro, Fez, Spleunky, TxK.
5. Borderlands 2 and that's it. Vita really is a weeaboo/indie system.

@ Arizato: Your post is the first thing I read when I started checking out the Vita. Thanks a bunch, though it opens up just as many questions as it answers.
@ emigre: What's weeabo?
@ razielleonhart: I'll definitely check out Soul Sacrifice!

No point until I actually get the Vita and check the firmware.

But then I will probably reveal my full incompetence and ask one question after the other.
And thanks for your and all the other replies, that's really lovely!

To quote you: 'Firmware 3.01 is the latest firmware that supports hacking at the moment.'

According to the seller, the Vita has a 3.18 firmware, so I take it I'm screwed when it comes to SNES emulation?

I suppose I'll just have to sell it for a profit and get a 3DS instead. More is the pity, as I like the Vita's hardware much more.

No, you can hack 3.18 (eCFW) just fine. The exploited games are still on PSN. They will most likely be removed any day now though

Which game is it? I hope the Vita will be delivered the day after tomorrow, fingers crossed the game will still be available then.

Now the way I understood the hack to work is as such:

1. Buy the game via PSN
2. Install the game on your Vita
3. Download a fake game-save from Wololo.net
4. Put game-save on the Vita
5. Boot the game
6. Load-game-save
7. ???
8. Install SNES emu

After doing that, will I just have a a shortcut to the SNES emu on my Vita or do I have to go through steps 1-8 every time I want to open up the SNES?

There is a huge list on woolly.net for exploited games. Here are some recommendations though (assuming your vita and PSN account is US, not EUR or JP):
If you are simply looking for the cheapest and easiest game to trigger the exploit, the game you would need to buy is Talkman Travel: Tokyo. The game is for $2.99, and the exploit will auto activate as soon as you run the game (once the exploited save is copied to the vita).

If you are looking however looking for a game that's not expensive, and you might actually play at some point cause it's good, and don't mind the extra step of loading the save game, then consider patapon 1 or patapon 2. They are $5.99 each.

There are other good games, such as god of war, but that costs $14.99. So it really depends on what you're looking for. Most likely, you'll be wanting the first option :)

The current game on PSN is Gladiator Begins for PSP which is $7.99

That's just one game out of a lot available

No, you don't have to re-install the exploit each time. You just boot the exploited game, load the save, then it'll load up VHBL/eCFW.

That's an error on my part. Thanks for pointing that out. The FAQ was a little oudated. You can hack 3.18.
