Updated from 8.1.0-18 just a week or so ago.

Seems to have just changed the eshop. No reports of blocked flashcards.

My R4 SDHC Dual Core wasnt blocked nether
They probably won't even bother blocking ds flashcarts anymore since the wifi has been terminated and the exploit that was installed using ds flashcarts won't work on newer firmwares.

Fairly true, but you never know they could throw us a curve ball at some point :P

Some interesting dev chatter about this update. Too interesting to pass up.

Not too surprised that no flashcarts are being blocked. Doesn't seem like they are bothering to attempt that anymore. the DS market is shrinking and the DS profile exploit is no longer relevant in latest firmware revisions and the 4.5 consoles still floating around will either be updated by normal customers or those already exploiting the system won't update it anyway. They have no motivation to block them right now. The only thing that might change is if/when Gateway gets around to their next update since they supposedly got 7.x encryption working in their emunand.

As for Smealum's future homebrew release, I doubt this update breaks anything seeing that all it changed was the eShop. Unless the eShop happened to be his entry point. But that seems unlikely. I would bet there's a good chance his entry point is somewhere in the internet browser somewhat like the Wii U exploit was which makes sense. The internet browser is most likely the most complex coding wise compared to all the other built-in apps since it has to handle a lot of internet stuff and such. The more code you need the more chance there's going to be a bug or exploit. ;)

I agree about the whole DS Card blocking though I still feel its better to always better to be wary of it, since while they have not in a long time don't mean to say they wont in the future :)

Seems like this update is mandatory if you want to use the online services (like what's happening with the Wii U)
I was prompted to update before I was able to check if there was an update for my Mii Plaza.

Snailface what would make them think Nintendo is preparing for the next 3ds?
You have to ask them.
They can see what's in the new firmwares and one would assume they see evidence of modules intended for a new 3ds model.

Ok. I trust them, I just thought the answer was in that irc chat that you posted
