Currently on 4.3 and looks like I never updated the emuNAND as it says GW3d 4.3. I am interested in getting Shovel Knight on my 3DS. A few questions

  1. Is it even possible for me to access the eshop to purchase the game on my current firmware, or put my firmware in a position to access the eshop?
  2. Assuming #1 is possible, or becomes possible at some point in the near future, what are the implications of purchasing a game and having my Nintendo account connected to an emulated firmware?

Thanks in advance

I've got a general question about 3DS flash cards. Not sure if this is where to post it, and if it isn't I apologize, but here goes:

3DS hacking seems kind of intimidating to me. I'm not a very technology savvy guy (although I did install CFW on the PSP back in the day when only the 'phat' 1000 were available) and I keep reading other topics on here where people are bringing up stuff about emunand, systemnand, dumping stuff, backing up your system's nand, chance of bricking even when following steps (what's with the brick code I keep hearing about in the Gateway and other 3DS flash cards' codes??), people accidentally updating their 3DS to the latest firmwares...it all sounds much more complicated than CFW on the PSP ever was.

My question is, for someone like me who doesn't know much about programming/hacking, is the Gateway still worth it? I have a 4.3 firmware 3DS that I've been refusing to update for a while now, but can't bring myself to buy a Gateway because of how complicated a lot of it sounds. It just seems much more inconvenient and troublesome than the DS/PSP ever were. The brick code I read about which seems to be present in both Gateway and MT card is kind of concerning as well.

What do you guys think? Should I just plunge for Gateway now, or wait a little bit until hopefully it gets easier to use 3DS roms?

Tbh, it's quite easy to understand when you try, there's actually a few similarities to how the PSP scene played out, like one of the devs including brick code because people where taking their work and claiming they made it( that's what the brick code is here)

Really if you just follow the setup tutorial on the gateway site you will have no issues, just do it in order, one step at a time and it will all make sense as you go along

Cool thanks for the response. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and order a Gateway. Hopefully I don't mess up my 3DS haha.

The only thing to look out for is making sure you don't accidentally update, but once you have emunand set up, it becomes second nature to just jump straight into settings before you even.get the update prompt in system nand

And pretty sure this is covered in the setup guide but just make sure you take a nand dump once you have the card, this is your get out of jail card if you ever do accidentally update

How easy/hard would it be to USB mod my 3ds? (nonXL) Never really soldered anything before so I really doubt I'm going to, just curious.

It is more intimidating than modding a psp, the steps are relatively simply and the main thing you have to be aware of not updating your system nand and remembering to jump into settings everytime. Oh and to be aware of new games that have new updates and to pretty much restrict your game playing to roms only unless you're 100% sure a retail game won't update your system

Hey guys, what's the word on the r4i Gold 3DS Deluxe flash card? I have an r4i one for my DS and it's been fantastic for me, and the r4i Gold 3DS Deluxe is on sale for $40 right now. Is it worth it? The only real downside I see it that it doesn't support online play as far as I know, but I don't care about that anyway (I never play games online). I just want to play stuff such as Fire Emblem Awakening and New Super Mario Bros 2, along with games from the virtual console.

Any advice? I'm really considering it but the reviews for it on realhotstuff.com are pretty discouraging (a few reviews say it just flat out doesn't work? Are they just most likely installing it incorrectly?)

its a clone of the gateway card, it does work but it does also have its bugs where they obviously don't know how to copy the gateway software properly, not sure if your really interested in pokemon or animal crossing but it wont play either of them, they current firmware they have out is randomly deleting peoples saves, if price is very important to you and you dont mind having to put up with random bugs, it should work ok, but if you want the original card its copied from that would be the gateway card...more expensive but they always get features first and bugs are very very rare

Cool thanks. So I guess when it comes to these flash cards you really do get what you pay for...I don't really care about Pokemon or Animal Crossing (already have a physical copy of Pokemon X), but Gateway being the original one does make the card a bit more tempting...are both cards able to run VC roms fine? And with either card you can just backup your saves on your computer correct?

well r4i works with VC games if they are patched as it cant support the other save type which gateway does......iirc some of the VC games don't work on R4i, but i don't own one to try, but gateway will play pretty much all games released except for a couple that use 7.x rom encryption, these are tomodochi life, club nintendo football, pokemon art studio....and i think there is one more, gateway is apparently working on a fix for these that is meant to be out soon

also i want to just make sure you understand these cards require your 3ds to be on FW 4.5 or lower, if you have been playing pokemon you would have to be on 6.x or higher

Ah I see, yes I have 2 3DS systems, one XL that is up to date as far as firmware goes, and a regular 3DS I got for really cheap for the sole purpose of homebrew/flash cards. The regular 3DS is on 4.3.

I think I'm just going to go with Gateway, considering that once the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remakes are released, there's no telling if they will work on the r4i gold deluxe. Thanks for the help

I don't think there is any telling if they'll work on Gateway or no as well. I guess they'll probably release an update but it'll probably take months

Well it all depends on if/when gateway release this update that solves 7.x encryption, long as they aren't using any newer protections they should be fine, so far there hasn't been any new mentions of any new encryption methods but only time will tell once they are released, 7.x encryption was known about a few months before it was even implemented on a retail cart
