Steam Music Now in Open Beta

Valve has released Steam Music, a music player app built into the Steam overlay, into the beta builds of Steam for all to access! This simple yet wonderful little tool lets you access your music library as you play your games, now you don't have to tab out of your games to change your songs.

You can access Steam Music by opting in to the Steam Open Beta clients.

It's pretty simple as it is but it's convenient if you want to listen to music while playing games and don't want to Alt-Tab or waste hotkeys.

Unfortunately I use Spotify for most of my music so it doesn't work as well. I gave it a shot though and it works.

For some games but I think you'll get sick of Terraria's soundtrack after the thousandth hour of playing.

Dedicated OSTs for short games are fine, but play a game that expands hundreds of hours and the same tunes will be boring. Like I'll play New Vegas with my music because I already heard every song on the radio about a hundred times.

Considering the fact that the current GUI is less than satisfactory in terms of usableness and due to a lack of support file formats I think I will just stay with a dedicated music player like I have in the past for now. They would have to make significant improvements for me to even consider it a decent alternative.

this is actually great i'll use this a lot. because when i play civ 5 i have winamp open playing music (better than the games) while i play

Am I the only one who initially assumed valve was going to start selling music now?

I gotta say that by itself, the feature is rather "meh". Many music players (like AIMP3) already allow you to program global hotkeys, so I can already do what I want with a few shortcuts (alt+F7=volume down, alt+F8=volume up, alt+F9=previous song, alt+F10=start/pause, alt+F11=next playlist, alt+F12=next song). But I'm curious how this'll work in combination with a game controller.

And best of all: this is good news if this means it'll also be in steamOS.

Yeah, that too. I could already envision a humble bundle live aid music pack.

Erm...I tend to USE my mouse buttons on quite some games. The reason I use those shortcuts is that I don't want to interfere with whatever games I happen to play at that time.

that's why i have the logitech g510 it can auto switch between profiles. in civ5 don't need much buttons to play so i have the mouse buttons set up to fully control winamp
