The word never bothered me personally, I don't think any words do, just their context, but ya, this is SHOCKING for Nintendo, really shocking! Then again our culture has adjusted it's "moral/ethical values" in the past few years, so some words that were considered to be cuss words, not longer are and are now the new crap, freakin', shlong, and so forth.

I think the surprise is more in the fact that "bastards" still has a negative connotation surrounding it, yet they're allowing that as a name. For over 20 years, Nintendo has had a family-friendly perception (Look on TCRF at a lot of older Nintendo games - There's tons of censoring, such as pubs and religious imagery), however, I think with their newer systems, they're trying to move away from that, especially with the larger number of "M" rated titles. The Gamecube had few, the Wii had a few more, but the Wii U is really going all-out trying to appeal to the average gamer by allowing more content and being less restrictive on language and whatnot.

Originally, no, it never was really used as an insult per se, as it referred to an illegitimate son.

Right, I'm aware of that, but originally, its connotation wasn't nearly as bad as it's since been made out to be.

I think the point here is that this word has a very negative connotation, especially in the United States. And really, there is no reason for this game to be named this. There are many more professional and tasteful names this game could have.

However, as the many Japan-o-philes here will agree, the word "bastard" is used a TON in Japanese animes and etc., so perhaps it's not such a big deal there. My guess is that this would be more of a translation issue than an intentional choice by developers.

It's hard to make a non-violent title out of this game when it contains "Bombing".

but anyways, I don't get all the hassle about the name... it's not an insult per se, it just becomes in insult, if it is used in an insulting context by people, who obviously don't even know, what the word means... so meeeh, I think nintendo did the right thing by choosing this name, everyone who says, it is an insult can just get this answer by nintendo: "use a dictionary, only stupid people think, this is a bad word :trollface: " (yeah, wanna see some ninty guy throw that into the face of an angry soccer mom)

I think, that the game description of "Nihilumbra" is far more shocking then "Bombing Bastards" title... here, have a look

basically you play a shadow, that can't be arsed to even think about the consequences of his decision to escape from the void... resulting in the void chasing after him and DEVOURING/DESTROYING the earth, that he passed by..... weeeeeelllll great, we destroy and kill everything on our path, just because we play a whiny little bratty shadow, that wants to run away from home, awesome game o.O#


edit: although I like the graphic style and the soundtrack, it creates a really strong atmosphere, that actually fits into the description but still, it is disturbing to some kind of degree
