I know 5.0 is safe, but I will not update and allow Nintendo to sneak in updates without my concent.

Yes, but it will be a long time before anything is released. Many people may not believe me as a result, but I don't care much. They'll be wrong in the end. ;)

Has marionumber1

To continue it works as you made of numerous French supports your team one attent with impatience the exit(release) of the first one hack

Continue how his(her,its)!!

That's been known for a while. The Wii did this as well, so it's only expected that the Wii U would do this.

Strange as Mariokart never prompted me before.
Played first day offline only.
BUT when I connected via Wifi my WiiU updated.

Also Note that a family member of mine purchased the MarioKart pack containing a WiiU Black With 5.0.0 pre installed. Wich makes sense if MK contains the 4.1 update.
It would be a hassle for People to update after buying the MK pack.

Gameupdate I presume, not a system menu.
Some updates are ridicualousely big, some around 4GB, makes sense to put those on discs.
Or maybe I missed agame or two wich would contain a system menu update

Yeah, that's gonna be a problem after a while, even on the 32 GB models, I would assume, right?

Yup, my free mariokart game wonderfull 101, spans nearly 15 Gb...
So I ditched my 32 Gb usb stick and will swap it for a nice little drive in a few days from now.
Its also a pain the ass the WiiU will only accep 1 usb device to work with.
As I previousely could manage with an 8GB stick along side the 4 gb free space on my WiiU.

But I think either8 GB /32GB will not suffice if you are interested in digital downloads.
I have a few downloads and now I am getting annoyed from the swapping of usb stick for my save games alone.
I still shink the White 8 GB model is still the cheapest way to go.
Initially I ordered 2 black premium sets but they got cancelled and I had to wait an initial 3 moths for a white only ( you cannot imagine the trouble I went through to get my money back...)
Eventualy you will need a external device if you like collecting games.
Though the black one is very, very nice to look at.
Hopefull u Nintendo will give the option to buy a separate black gamepad in the future.
The sticks of the white gamepad will shift color after a very short time.
Ah well...
When I bought the system I could buy two more games for the same money the black premium costs. I think the preices are now a lot beter for the black one.
And if I would have the chance to buy it again I would definately buy the black one.
I think it's is build a little better too, it just feels more solid.
It might be te used plastics, idk

It's not the digital downloads that bother me so much, as I avoid them like the plague (let's be honest, tying games to a console worries me and makes it a PITA to obtain when the console dies, and it will), but the update data that installs for a game, if you have a lot of games, and eventually, all that update data's gonna most likely screw your NAND over, regardless of the model. Yeah, it sucks. The Assassin's Creed IV update data is about 1 GB, which is pretty crazy if you think about it. I only got the white model because I already have a 500 GB HDD and I didn't want Nintendo Land, didn't interest me at all, to the 8 GB size didn't bother me, at least, initially. But if these disc updates end up being unnecessarily huge, yeah, those with that model are SOL. Only option is to go digital, so yeah, damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'll only go digital once it's tied to an account and not console, so like, never.
That's the best for me really, whenever it updates I always have to wait and I hate waiting to get to the game!
Or you know, turning of Standby will prevent that, that's the catch, you have to have Standby enabled for that to take effect, but that also means no quick menu.

but...what about homebrew?

The homebrew would be hacking the console to play NGC/Wii backup games but for Wii I have the discs of the games I want to play and Nintendo's releasing a GameCube adapter for the Wii U so I'm covered.

I need to get myself a Wii U USB-LAN adapter for MK8/SSB4 online matches 'cause WiFi isn't too stable for this kind of thing for me.

Razor83@ Did what you said and got this (nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net):

23.62.236.139

nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net:

69.25.139.188

Blocked them both and now when I try to update the system it yells at me with Error Code 162-0025. I'm pretty sure it's the first one, because when I ping the second one it throws a "Request timed out.". Lemme go try again with just the first one and see if that's the one.

EDIT 1: Okay, when I block one of each individually, it still updates. Let's try both...

EDIT 2: Nope, still updates. That error must have just been random. Now what?
Well your IP address for "nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net" is the same as mine:-
69.25.139.188
Thats the only IP address I had to block in my router to make the update display an error code.

I also tried pinging the above address from a command prompt on my PC (After removing it from the router block list) and also received a "Request timed out", so I assume that Nintendo's server is looking for a specific request from a Wii U and wont respond to anything else. The Wii U is definitely requesting this address through, as I can see 26 blocked connection attempts in my routers log since I enabled the Wii U standby mode yesterday.

As for the other address:-
nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
Are you certain it doesnt show two (or more) IP addresses when you ping it from your PC? If so you need to block all of them.

Also, make sure you are blocking the IP address correctly in the router - on mine you have to select a direction (LAN>Internet) a source and destination address (Left source blank and set destination IP as 69.25.139.188) and the protocol type to block (Select 'All') Make sure you are entering the IP address and not just the website address, as that can be resolved to multiple IP addresses.

Other than the above suggestions I cant really help you anymore, sorry :(

<EDIT>This thread has some interesting info and some other addresses that you could try and block:-

and this post by Cyan shows the start log of a European Wii U update:-

From that log it looks like some other addresses you could try are:-

ccs.wup.shop.nintendo.net
ecs.wup.shop.nintendo.net
ias.wup.shop.nintendo.net

Let us know how it goes!

Looks like going into vwii doesn't prevent updating.

I had a preparing to update thing a couple days ago even with software updates and standby both off, i stopped it and then didn't bother me again for some time, then yesterday night i turned on the wiiu through the gamepad holding B and just after it said entering wii mode i got the preparing to update again, had to unplug from the wall. I'm guessing it will keep trying to update from time to time.
