Last gen. We had DS, PSP and Wii hacked from the beginning. The vita, wii u, 3ds scenes are doing a little progress sometimes. But it will never happen as last gaming gen :(

The 3DS scene is making strides, people are already developing games for ARM11 with 3D support and a full-blown CFW is well within reach. As for the Wii U and the PSVita, the platforms are not really wide-spread enough to validate any work on them, I have more faith in PS4/XBO hacking, although they'll all get hacked in due time, just like it was the case with the 360 and the PS3.

I'm betting you wanna play the games for "free", let's consider you bought the consoles so probably you can afford the games too.

It's like an Xbox One gamer complaining that he's not getting "free" games (via Xbox Games With Gold) despite that he (or his parents) paid $500 for it. $500 and can't afford the games? That's bullshit!

Because homebrew developers don't need to bother with closed-consoles anymore for software development, in today's age there are plenty of open-source alternatives.

Pretty sure these companies (minus the epic fail in the vwii) are on top of security since all those console last gen and even the gen before that were exploited and even on the system there were consoles on them via emulators, it was just one big download fiesta.

From the beginning?

The Wii. Late 2008 saw the Wii Fail presentation. The wii was not long before then in 2006. To be fair 24c3 the year before (so a year after) quite literally saw the first non GC related hacks happen around the same time.
The DS. Give or take the neoflash http://gbatemp.net/threads/nds-rom-patcher-released.27468/ (September 2005), now Darkfader's work happened in January 2005 which was technically before the EU release (Japan had it in late 2004)..
The PSP.... May 2005 I believe was this and the stuff that would become the 1.00 firmware exploits. Never mind how long it took things to stabilise after that.

Also the PS3... that took a little while. Mid 2010 by my count for the earlier USB stuff which was good. The console hacking 2010 saw new years 2010-2011 have an explosion of things.
The 360 had the DVD mods which were great. There was also the King Kong homebrew mod that nobody could really use. JTAG came to the fore in the middle of 2009 though, for a late 2005 console.

As others have said as well give or take the PS360, though even there it could have been far better and there were some fundamental mistakes*, that go around saw the companies do a pale imitation of a real hardened embedded device. Do not get me wrong I would not have envied anybody that had to come up hacking the said go around, I certainly do not this current one, but that is a different discussion.

*the console hacking 2010 does well for the PS3 here. The 360's DVD stuff (a secure device in which the sole item that vets the authenticity of media also verifies itself..... madness) attesting to the 360's main failure, the rest of it was not bad though (do note it is an old presentation and actually dismisses the thing that would later lead to the RGH family of hacks, as noted by the people that eventually made said hacks. Do also note that RGH, and some of the PS3 stuff, used techniques not commonly seen in console and embedded device hacking before then).

I swear everything I see a topic like this, I think the author is thinking "WHRE R MAH FREE GAEMS!!11!!!!!one!11!".
Anyway, nowadays homebrew devs got a lot of open source alternatives (Some better than the closed hardware) if they want to code their own softwares, also if you want to play old games, Wii U and PS4(I think?)(Not sure about the XBone) have some kind of Retro Compatibility with old games too.
Rant-like text aside, 3DS hacking progressed these last months, we even got an early 3DS emu and some basic homebrews, nobody cares about the Vita, so there isn't a big demand for hacking it, Wii U isn't (sadly)selling well, I guess it will take a while to hack it, bar the vWii fiasco/derp from Nintendo. This generation best bet for hacking so far is the PSBox(Most popular systems and they are pretty powerful), but I think it will also take a while if we think of what happened with the PS3 and the X360.

What fiasco was there about vWii?

I'm all for filthy pirating but even I have to admit topics like this make me want to punch the OP in the balls.

Try supporting the developers. It's a pretty cool thing that, y'know, keeps the industry ALIVE?
I like when things get hacked on one hand because I can try all the stuff I never in a million years would have bought or thought to buy (and if I like it a lot, I buy it). On the other hand I can't stand when leeches just pirate everything and don't buy anything. Leeching is caustic. Maybe not for bigger games, but the more niche games take massive blows from piracy and it's a real shame because great titles never get localized, or fantastic series get dropped. Times like this are awesome for more fragile titles.

I dont like "if you have money to buy console..." If you as me playing daily in public transport, you have game for a week, and for 3ds its a lot of money its crazy expensive, on PS vita I had ps plus, nice service...

Nobody cares about homebrews. Well, there definitely is someone, but the interest has lowered for this new gen. I think the issue is mostly because, if you want to play a little with coding and no money, you will have better luck on Android, where BILLIONS of people might try your little sokoban clone rather than a very closed group of people that doesn't exist anymore anyway. It's all about piracy now.

At least now we have more lights pointed on indie developers. Most of them might suck, and they often don't release their games for free like homebrewers do, but they are still infinitely better than any HB game released on the DS.

TL;DR there are no people interested in developing homebrews because they all moved elsewhere. Who didn't leave is a crazy hobbyist and has all my respect and fistbumps.

So current generation is a sad story because it isn't hacked fast enough? Man...I thought I had seen all the pathetic self-justifications from pirates, but this is a new one.

Open gaming devices are more popular than ever (android's an open platform, there are linux tablets on the way, there's the ouya and IIRC that amazon thingy is also going to be open), and even the non-open ones show progress (vwii was hacked from day one, FFS!). And need I tell you about 3DS's gateway?

No, you still cannot pirate the wiiu games and it'd be ridiculous to expect PS4 or xbones to be hacked already (that is: to cater for illegal games). Big fucking deal! Go crack the darn thing yourself if it means that much to you. Then maybe you'll see that it's very hard work that mostly goes to a greedy and anything but thankful audience.
