ET found in New Mexico

Digging in Alamogordo, New Mexico today, excavators discovered cartridges for the critically-panned Atari game E.T., buried in a landfill way back in 1983 after Atari couldn't figure out what else to do with their unsold copies.

So apparently the urban legends are true

It was referenced below several times as an urban legend. Atari did admit to burying games there, but the disputed part was the 'millions of ET carts'. I guess that detail was the official urban legend. Anyway, its an interesting read.

It would have been hilarious if someone was actually trying to bury chemical waste in there...

It wasn't just E.T. cartridges, it was Atari's left-over merchandise in general that they had to dispose of, they just never disclosed the location of the burial site. Of course E.T. cartridges were supposedly the majority of the stuff there since the game flopped big time, but hey!

I don't think it's as big of a news story as people think. Yet. Finding a hundred (the latest article I read gave that number) various Atari cartridges really could have been anything. Once they can say they've found over 1,000, then it will get interesting.

Atari was well known for saving up as much as possible with hardware. I don't believe in the urban legend. I believe more in the theory that nowadays everyone thinks to be a great comedian or an illuminati researcher and put that cartridge themselves.
