Hi guys, I just wanted to ask for your help on what flash cart I should buy for my 3DS XL (latest official firmware) for playing DSi games....

It's all a bit of a minefield for me as there seems to be problems with bricking etc so can anyone suggest a flash cart I can go out and get now that will allow me to play my old DSi games without a risk of bricking? Cheers guys

There has only ever been one flash cart that supported DSi mode on any DS, and it was blocked starting at 3DS firmware 2.0 if memory serves me right. That card, the iEvo, was dropped for development a long time ago, so unless either Gateway releases a DS/DSi mode rewrite to allow direct booting of DS and DSi games, or the independent developers release a similar modification for exploitable 3DSes to allow the same functionality, don't expect to be able to play DSi titles on the 3DS short of buying them from the e-shop or from your retail cartridges. Standard DS games, however, you can still play with a compatible DS flash cart. The bricking fiasco was surrounding the 3DS flash card known as Gateway 3DS, and has nothing to do with standard DS flash carts.

I have tried to read through the stickies but they are a bit confusing for me....See, I used to own a DSi, and I had a flash cart for that which allowed me to play roms which were loaded onto the microSD card. Is there a similar product for the 3DS? I ask as it seems that not all of the flashcarts available for the 3DS can play 3DS games (in fact none of them seem to be able to play 3DS games on newer firmwares, am I right?) so I was a bit confused as to what they are for....I have just now realised after reading Gadorach 's comment that there is a difference between DS and DSi roms, how do I know which one any given game is?

Yepi69, what are the differences between those two things?

DSiWare games are games you can download from the Nintendo DSi Shop, but I think you meant normal DS games right?

That's an easy question, Supercard DSTWO, its the best Flashcart for DS games.
I have a 3DS XL with the latest firmware and a Supercard DSTWO and playing DS games on the big screens its totally totally worth it, also it supports the last firmware for the 3DS, all the time.
And you can even emulate GBA and SNES as well

OK great and just to clarify, the DSTwo is capable of running roms of DS games such as Final Fantasy III, Pokemon White/Black etc? I am still a little unclear on the difference between a DS and a DSi game...

A DSi game (called DSi enhanced game) its a normal DS game but with stuff made to use on the DSi was well, like Pokemon White.

Its a DS/DSi game, which means if you play it on a DS, you can chat with your friends using only your microphone but if you play it on a DSi or 3DS, you can use the camera of the DSi, the hardware of the DSi everything the DSi has got.
Since SuperCard DSTWO is a DS flashcart, it only plays games in DS mode, which means no DSi camera or anything else.

So I've just had a good look around for a Supercard DSTwo in particular, but before I buy I just wanted to check one last time... (sorry)....If all I want is to be able to play my old DS roms on my 3DS, I just need a DSTwo? Is there any point in getting a 3DS card (like the Gateway)? I would guess not as it seems that the 3DS "half" of the Gateway won't work as I have the latest firmware, and the DS "half" will just be identical to the DSTwo. Am I correct there?

actually the DSTwo will be way better (extra features and firmware support), the blue gateway card (DS cart) is just a Ace3DS clone
not only that but it only supports up to 6.2 (or somewhere around there) 3DS firmware where as dstwo supports the latest firmware
no point in buying a gateway if you are on latest firmware

+1 for the Supercard DSTWO - cant go wrong for playing DS games.

But I just want to clarify in case it wasn't clear, you cannot use this to play 3DS games on the 3DS console, only DS games on the 3DS console.

For emunand (and 3DS games) you'd need the R4i Gold 3DS Deluxe, which is similar to the Gateway but is just a clone which is likely to have poorer support.
This one costs a lot more than the DSTWO. You can technically use the Gateway's emunand without a Gateway cart, but there isn't much point unless you want to play 3DS imports.

The regular R4i Gold is for DS mode only, no emunand, and is as you said about half the price of the DSTwo (a bit less actually) but it's all around a decent flashcart. The DSTWO has several advantages over it, one being that it doesn't get blocked as often, and there is usually a patch out within a day when an update blocks it, it's also harder to block permanently so you aren't likely to have to buy another DS flashcart if you go with the DSTWO. It also has a built-in CPU allowing for some cool things like SNES/GBA emulation (full speed with a low frameskip though glitchy with some games), playback of popular video formats, and so on.

I'm just looking for a DS mode only flashcart that supports emunand (just emunand NOT 3DS rom playback).

I've heard you can run emunand from any 3DS compatible DS mode flashcart and backup your nand, etc, play retail carts and access e-shop without having to update... but you're saying that R4i Gold (not deluxe) can't do this?
