I'm following this tutorial.

I have a gameshark, formatted the usb stick to fat using windows formatter. I created the exploit, finding the title id from the disc. All necessary files are on the USB. I copied the exploit to the 8MB Sony Memcard. The only difference is that he used Spyro, and I'm using Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed.

Now my main problem is disc reading errors. I have two PS2s at my disposal.
One is a Slim
Model No. SCPH-79001
Date Code 7B
Serial No. HU2335589

The other is a phat
Model No. SCPH 30001 R
Date Code 1C
U0969346

The phat will read the Gameshark just fine, but for whatever reason will not read the PS1 disc. The Slim is just the opposite.

I Copied the exploit with the phat, and tried to load it on the slim, but it just boots the PS1 game. I've gone over it all a dozen times, but have gotten so close only to fall flat on my face. I would really appreciate some help.

I have no clue - you'll just have to go through the guides and find out. What I can tell you though is that it doesn't get any more genuine as far as the guide is concerned - it's literally on the FMCB page. :P

But my PS2 Phat will not load the ps1 game for some reason. How am I supposed to use this guide?

Sorry if you think I'm being difficult, I'm just completely dumbfounded and overwhelmed with this. Shouldn't a phat be able to read ps1 games?

Are you getting any kind of an error? Is it reading the disc at all? Is the spindle spinnig? Have you cleaned the disc and the laser? There's a variety of reasons why the Phat wouldn't read a PS1 disc.

I keep getting a disc read error. it reads ps2 games just fine. The slim is just the opposite, for gameshark anyway.

The Disc Read Error with PS1 discs or CD-ROM's in general is a common issue with Phat PS2's from what I'm reading and there's very little you can do about it. Practically speaking the only thing you might want to try is cleaning the system's drive lens, but it has to be done with extreme caution (for obvious reasons).

Here's a case similar to yours:

Prior to the fix:

Post-fix:

The guide with the applied fix is attached in the post-fix video's description, although chances of success are pretty hit-and-miss.

EDIT: I'd like to underline that if you've never done anything like this before, chances are that you will irreversibly damage the laser. You're far better off looking for a FMCB user who'll install it on your Memory Card. Have a look at the FreeMCBoot Install Service thread - it's a convenient solution and all you have to do is pay for postage. ;)

It's interesting that you took the EXACT same path to softmodding your PS2 that I did. Same games and everything. I found 007 Agent Under Fire to be a bit easier to get to load, and to burn, but it really sucks having to beat the first stage to be able to get the hack to work.

You need the USBUtil2.0 tool, to be able to copy your ISOs to your external HDD. I just use the full ISO, or rip one from my PSOne collection, and that program will properly convert and move the ISO file into the properly named folders on the HDD, and will split the ISO into parts that fit the FAT32 format of your HDD.

It really is a simple process. I got into modding my PS2 about two years ago after losing my entire Swap Magic collection of burned discs from my very first modded PS2 slim. Most games run pretty well off of the HDD, but, FMV-heavy games should be burned to a disc and played through ESR.

I was able to 100% Final Fantasy X - International off of the HDD. Slight choppiness during FMVs, but everything else worked fine. KH2 Final Mix should be burned to a disc, though, as should games like Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance 2.

Feel free to ask any other questions you might have. I'd be glad to help you get the most out of your new toy.

How can I get it to play games of my external HDD?

This will only work on Phat PS2 models obviously but u will need a Network Adapter and a spare HD....it Will be a Desktop HD SATA if I'm not mistaken.....then with a homebrew u can either Ripp offiicial games to HD or transfer on a PC to the harddrive......

Yeah, one of my friends has a phat PS2 with the official HDD for it, and it loads games MUCH more smoothly than any USB mod does. I just don't want to have such a big, clunky device cluttering up my gaming mecca.

Again, using USB drives on a PS2 is a terrible idea. Use SMB loading instead if possible - the compatibility is far superior, FMV's and streamed content don't chug and it's very simple to set up. It'll save you a lot of trouble later down the line, trust me. Resort to USB only when SMB doesn't work for whatever reason.
