So I have started a new game in fire emblem awakening. The problem is that my character is a "tactician", and is only using magic. I want my character to be a warrior (or something like that), can I change that?

Yes, with a Second Seal once you reach level 10+, but you will revert to level 1 for the class you switch to. The tactician can change to any class permissible for his/her gender (except for villager, but villager sucks).

Is there a way to start the game with another class, or are you stuck with being a tactician in the beginning?

You have to be a tactician in the beginning, there is no way to start out as a different class. I recommend NOT changing classes for a while though. It's best to first use a Master Seal when you reach a high enough level to become a Grandmaster (I think it's best to do this at 20 but I guess you can do it at 20 if you really want to) to learn the Ignis skill at level 5 and Rally Spectrum at level 15 - both are really useful. After that, go ahead and use a Second Seal to change to whatever. I think you find Master and Second seals starting from chapter... 8 or so? Can't quite remember. Sometimes the wandering merchant sells them.
That said if you don't care about that, just go ahead and use a Second Seal once you get one. You'll be able to become any class you want.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. Tacticians can use magic, but also swords if you hadn't noticed. It's a pretty good class, really. Magic is just nice because of the range.

I don't know about anyone else's tactician, but at high levels my Grandmaster was an absolute house. Maxing out sword and book ranks made him able to equip the best gear.

And he ended shacking up with Anna, creating red headed stepchildren.

Id argue that you should level to 20 and then second seal into something that learns passives you want, master into advanced class till 15 then second seal into the class you want to be. Advanced classes level much slower so second sealing first gives you 20 more easy levels of stats and turns you into a complete monster

Okay, so having played a lot of this game:

YOUR TACTICIAN IS A FUCKING BEAST. Seriously, don't ever change that. The stats have high caps, especially at Grandmaster, and the fact that you can use spell books and swords with just as much oomph is pretty spectacular for creating a close/distance fighter. As well, look up a marriage guide. Your tactician will do best shacked up with a lot of people, but planning out the children is imperative for sending down the right skills and getting the best combos. Personally, I had my tactician hook up with Chrom's first daughter (the one you end up with no matter who Chrom marries), and the resulting child was also a tactician because of that (which was the plan).

When using seals:
Due to the fact that you can actually level grind in this game, where you couldn't in the other games, figure out what skills you want for who. Depending on your money situation and such, you may not necessarily have access to enough Master and Second Seals for a team of 30 people. Playing on the initial normal difficulty, grinding isn't super necessary, but remember: if you aren't ready to advance a class yet, or don't have a Master Seal to spare, use a Second Seal and change into the same class. You keep all of your stats and can simply work back up, likely hitting stat caps as you go for that class. Keep your units skill sets balanced too. Trust me: it's a pain in the ass if you neglect a few units that you'll need for marriage (which is all of them, by the way), and then you have to find a way to get that level two to essentially level 40 (to level 20, master seal, up to 20 again) without having to split experience with someone who is already way too strong for what you're doing.

Also, Galeforce. Learn it. Love it.

I don't particularly find the Grandmaster class all that. The inability to use a forged Aversa's Night is somewhat of a dealbreaker

Unless it's the child with Shadow Gift, then...
Also, Galeforce. Learn it. Love it.

Seems like TC's MyUnit is male, so as far as I can tell no Galeforcing for him :(

Completed the game on the hardest difficulty, using Fredrick like a walking tank for my Chrom/FeMU until they could hold their own and break game, and a tiny bit Morgan because too stronk.
Anyways bragging aside, i would also recommend you to go for level 20 tactican, and then change to grandmaster to unlock Ignis. First of all tactican gives you veteran which is one of the sickest gamebreaking skills in the game(If you grind) and Ignis adds up str to magic or vice versa giving you some sick amount of damage. Of course the game is easily broken by having Sol and Aversa's Night. Simply run forward. End turn as you become an immortal beast denying them all hope. If you roll FeMU, get galeforce and watch you being in the middle of an army within 1 turn. Double turns is sick.

EDIT: Right... Didnt actually answer your question. Thats simple. Simply give your tome to someone else and only have your sword. DONE! Tactican actually has equally amount of STR and MAG. Unless your RNG is quite random deciding to give your avatar tons of MAG. Why not just use both though. Or do like me. Use a forged levin sword which is cheaap and wreck havoc.
