Hacking Considering purchasing 3DS - few questions re hacking

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing a PAL 3DS running firmware 3.0. I am a bit overwhelmed by all the jargon everywhere, but I realise that this version will allow for 3DS roms to be played. I am however a bit put off by the reports of bricking. Which flash cart would you recommend and is 3.0 a safe firmware to run roms from?

You need a 3DS to be at firmware version 4.1-4.5. You can check which retail carts you'll need to use to update to any of these firmwares by going to this page: http://3ds.essh.co/

As far as 3DS flashcarts, the Gateway 3DS would be the best one to get at this point, even though they seem to be at the center of this bricking fiasco. There is a way to avoid bricking, however, by using the Gateway firmware version below 2.0b2 (in other words, version 2.0 beta 2). So 2.0b1 or 1.2 versions of Gateway's firmware are the safe bet right now.

Doesn't really matter unless you're unable to get a hold of some of the retail carts that have the 3DS firmware you need.

Many thanks for your speedy reply. I've purchased the unit in better condition on version 4.1. I'll follow your advice about the Gateway card and stick to the appropriate firmware for it. I had been aware of those firmware numbers but wasn't sure how it all came together. Thanks a lot.

You should buy a MT-Card or the GW. MT-Card has only 1.0 with no bricking code, GW has 2.0B2 with bricking code and 3.3 (R4i Gold Deluxe, 3DS Link & Orange) is equal to 2.0 (R4i Gold Deluxe, 3DS Link & Orange).

I think I'd prefer a physical button over a freezing menu. In addition, it already has MultiROM and saves when you save ingame (you don't have to press Home & X).
I would wait for MT 1.1/ 2.0 and GW 2.0 before I bought anything in his position.

Note that GW2.0 is very likely to have the same bricking feature though.

There are only two companies who are developing their own code, Gateway and MT-Card. Both are priced almost the same. Gateway has been on the scene since the start and their firmware can play any game except for 2 (pokemon and something else). MT-Card is still very new and very basic at this point. I'd highly recommend gateway because you can immediately play all games and they will have the same multirom feature in the near future.

I agree. MT-card has multi-rom support now, but there are a lot of games it can't play.

Gateway has released a video last week showing their multi-rom demonstration. Shouldn't be long before they release it.

It can play every game released before SDK 5.X. That's a very huge number.
MT released a video showing NAND saving working (or at least allowing to start Animal Crossing new leaf) weeks ago, before GW did.
