I think it's a great strategy by Gateway.
Let's say you make something original. You start a company called "Gateway".
You sell plenty of models at a very good price (100 bucks or more for some website! wow!) and you support your customers.
All of the sudden, some people copy your work. They literally steal it. You can't "block" their devices, so what do you do?
You can block their entire console. You can make a point.
So what do you do? You block the entire console. There's no other choice in this matter. When you block a console, *everyone* will know it was you.
Everyone chants "boo Gateway!" But you know what those people know? "Gateway is the original creator of everything I used."
Everyone chants "that's not right for Gateway, I don't like it!" You know what? You're dealing with the piracy scene. No one has 'morals', no one *cares* what you do besides maybe some consumers, and you've protected them against this problem.
So... if you're in Gateway's shoes, what would you do? Would you let everyone rip off your work? No, you wouldn't. This is a money-making opportunity. You have a chance to block the fakers, block everyone who even tries to be like you. And you *will* take it in their position.
And let's just pretend other people send in stuff. "gateway, you bricked our 3DS!"
You know who cares? No one. Gateway isn't responsible.
