We might suffer from tornadoes, earthquakes etc..
We have no choice as along as we are human and living in this earth.
But, We are not supposed to be murdered, that's the difference.
(I mean if the GW users also have the risk of being bricked.)

R4i didn't murder anyone.
R4i distributed bad firmware to their users ... and a few r4i users had their $150 3DS ruined.
This isn't about murder.
This is about people making bad choices, buying cards that are substandard knockoffs with no support.
Buyer beware.
Suck it up buttercup.

No one is dead.

Well, gateway wants money, they dont give a shit about you or anyone else, why wouldn't they make competitors devices brick peoples consoles is the real question. You need to learn not to think others are considerate or have any feeling whatsoever.

Not exactly.

Gateway is trying to make money making a product.

It is r4i that just wants money (without making anything).

Shame on r4i for distributing bad firmware to their customers. Gateway didn't brick r4i user's 3DSes. R4i did.

It is not like Gateway has any real support. Do they have a technical support line? No! Do they operate out of a country where the courts can force them to honor any explicit or implied warranty? No! Do they even disclose the real name of their CEO? No! Can consumers who have suffered damages as a result of Gateway's negligence or malicious vandalism seek recourse in a an open and just judicial proceeding? No.

If true (I personally can't prove it), this would be a PR disaster. Well, ordinarily. But .. a device like this.. meh. Remember that Simpsons episode where Lisa gets branded as a bad babysitter.. then a day later people still want her services?

As I mentioned elsewhere, Nintendo allowed code in Sin & Punishment N64 ROM that would wipe a Doctor V64 BIOS. So think about that and see if it changes your opinion about Gateway's ethics compared to the practices of a seemingly more "reputable" company.

Don't forget sony's rootkit too.

I have been both an early adopter and an advocate for Gateway but this is just uncool. I own 2 4.5 3DS and have both Gateway and r4. Thankfully i have not used the new 3.x launcher with r4 but am using 2.02b with emunand and gateway.

I get the idea which is lets piss on the cloners and discredit them by bricking their customers 3DS. In many ways the cloners are to blame because if the are going to rip off gateway cod and mod it they should make sure it is safe......likely they don't have the knowledge or they would be making their own code.

Overall it is a shitty strategy by Gateway as 4.5 are in dwindling numbers so why brick users that could potentially be your customers? I just hope Gateway pulls this 'kill' code from their 2.0 final as overall I find this a distasteful move even though I remain their customer I find this behavior distasteful and immature.

Here's what this all boils down to: I can understand why somebody with a bricked console would be legitimately angry. Everybody else full of faux outrage is simply mad that they wasted $40 to $50 on a clone card that can't be updated now.

Okay great, you disagree with Gateway's actions. What are you actually going to do about it? Not buy a Gateway cart? You already did that.

How can people keep comparing original work and clone and referring them as 'competitor'.
And I also don't know why people call these 'clone supporters' as 'innocent customers'.
Work thieves and their supports finally got paid.

Anyone supporting Gateway is justifying their overpriced purchase. The price is dropping, has been dropping, and would have continued to drop even without this drama. I now fully expect the price to plummet, and NO MULTIROM support to ever be released for the Gateway. I think they're full of shit personally, I think they realized that they cannot implement multirom into their card as promised and are now killing off the Gateway name and starting from scratch.

Stupid ass cart anyway, one game per SD completely defeats the purpose of a flash cartridge for convenience.

Anyone supporting Gateway is happy their card is updateable and their 3DS isn't bricked
Updated for accuracy.

Anyone who wondered if the cheapo clone knockoff (made by a company who doesn't know anything about their own product) was too cheap to be true .... knows it was.

Well include me in that, because I DID own a Gateway, not anymore. I don't support these type of bullshit tactics.

But yes, I'm happy my 3DS isn't bricked, doesn't change the fact that a virus has been installed on it and that they still haven't delivered multirom.

They fail at business, end of story.

i have to say that those questions that people are stating about "potentially users" are nothing but lame, i updated mine gateway to 2.0b2, everything works fine and as they stated to their users, if those people who got their 3ds' systems with r4i or even 3ds link are getting games and only other errors they wont buy another card, this is a lame excuse, if it is only a small problem they stick with the clones and dont even wanna know about paying for the real one, they would sit there and wait for their team to do something about, its not immature at all what they did, since they only added the code to the software and nothing happened to their real users, only the clones, its not their problem to care about another brand simply copying their coding and releasing it witouth testing, beause if they indeed tested the bricks would occur to the team devices instead of the users, if you get bricked by a release of the another brand like r4i or 3ds link you should go blame and cry to them, not to gateway 3ds team, they copied and they released it under their name, so it should be their problem!

I think it's a great strategy by Gateway.

Let's say you make something original. You start a company called "Gateway".

You sell plenty of models at a very good price (100 bucks or more for some website! wow!) and you support your customers.

All of the sudden, some people copy your work. They literally steal it. You can't "block" their devices, so what do you do?

You can block their entire console. You can make a point.

So what do you do? You block the entire console. There's no other choice in this matter. When you block a console, *everyone* will know it was you.

Everyone chants "boo Gateway!" But you know what those people know? "Gateway is the original creator of everything I used."

Everyone chants "that's not right for Gateway, I don't like it!" You know what? You're dealing with the piracy scene. No one has 'morals', no one *cares* what you do besides maybe some consumers, and you've protected them against this problem.

So... if you're in Gateway's shoes, what would you do? Would you let everyone rip off your work? No, you wouldn't. This is a money-making opportunity. You have a chance to block the fakers, block everyone who even tries to be like you. And you *will* take it in their position.

And let's just pretend other people send in stuff. "gateway, you bricked our 3DS!"

You know who cares? No one. Gateway isn't responsible.

Gateway is the only card.
So now you don't have a 3DS card.
As long as you are cool with that.

Why would I have gotten rid of the card, if I wasn't "cool with that"? I have more video games than I know what to do with, I'm not getting suckered into overpaying for a gimp cart released by a bunch of arrogant pricks.

Awwwwwww you would of fitted right in with them too

Gateway didn't do anything except put a bid in on another person's hacking skills.

People need to quit acting like they are the ones who hacked the 3DS. That's not what happened.

I'll summarize what I feel:

If you hack a console, you have to expect bricking it. No matter the distributor, no matter who sold you the product... you have to be prepared to find a new one.

This is probably what separates me from the super poor group of teenagers on GBATEMP
