My recommendation is to stay away from any such product that has provably included code to damage the hardware it is meant to run on, regardless of their justification. I don't care how well it's coded all it takes is a simple unforeseen circumstance and it damages anyone's hardware randomly - despite mathieulh, myself or anyone else saying 'it should be safe' the simple existence of such code makes the product itself unsafe.

Or, to put it more simply:
Gateway too lazy or inept to come up with a way to disable clone cards... throws tantrum instead and goes godzilla on the hardware (3ds) that made people want a gateway at all in the first place, ensuring mistrust of the product type as well as a financial burden on a possible fan of your work.

Or even more simply:
If they've wasted even one second figuring out how to brick your 3ds on purpose, that is time they have not spent ensuring your 3ds is safe from harm while using their product. Please don't reward people with money for this type of behaviour.

Anyway, have fun - thankfully in my time on DS there was only the one bricker, and it wasn't ever sold as a retail product.
Actually they can't disable the clone cards since their FPGA and thus ASIC cannot be overwritten nor updated

Like normatt file (aka the region-free patch) was?

Person doesnt like WAD 1(normatt file) being used so the WAD 2 he creates (gw firmware) bricks console.

So no Normatt file isnt the one bricking consoles because that wasnt intended at all. GW on the other have the intention to brick if modified.

Let's see, 10 hours from now:

- if this thread is still alive
- if any evidence for the claim in the title is provided
- if more people will have posted about Neimod being anti-piracy (ha!)

I just remembered this
2.02B NOW AVAILABLE
23/12/2013
First of all, thanks to everyone who has been testing our public beta.

We mentioned previously that we would have a solution against accidental updates, but we decided not to release this just yet.
While we did succeed in preventing accidental updates for our test 3DS unit, it took trial and error to get it in that state, and we bricked the unit many times before succeeding.
Ultimately we decided t
hat it was too dangerous for public use right now.

For this release we have accumulated an insane amount of feedback after the initial release of Gateway v2.0b1 and have been hard at work the past weeks to further stabilize some of the new functionality. We are proud to present to you Gateway v2.0b2, the new public beta.

What's new?

* Many stability improvements over previous beta release
* Full support for firmware 7.1 (including saving and emunand GW3D indicator, etc.)

Please note emunand is not essential for latest title compatibility!
For the time being we advise only those with adequate knowledge to attempt to update emunand to latest firmware and make sure you always have at least a hard backup copy of the system nand.

Consider this release as a stop-gap release before the 2.0 final, which will bring exciting new features that are currently being heavily tweaked and optimized.

Merry X-mas from the GATEWAY 3DS Team!

And remember: support the innovators, not the imitators!

i bet if i waschanges hex code in anything homebrew to Wii it would probably cause a brick.. maybe normatt file wasn't well executed?

But Normatt's mod to GW launcher triggered the brick code, Correct ?

Even if the GW did what some are saying they did, who cares? They are making all the work, as long as it's safe to use the exploit and their launcher on the original GW card, they could even make the launcher draw dicks on screen when used in other carts. Also, we are fucking pirates. All of us. Even if you only use it for something else, I've got news for you: You're a pirate. We all are using (or about to use) something that shouldn't be used in the 3DS, so, anyone who purchases and use one of this carts are consciously aware of the risks. Our machines can get bricked. Also, I don't care, if the cloners copied pretty much everything GW did, in our country we have a say that literally translates to "a robber who robs a robber, has 1000 years of pardon", but, if they have that right, why shouldn't the GW team have the right to code some traps on the launcher? As long as it's safe to their consumer base, they can do whatever they want with it. "muahh, but they are bricking peoples machines", NO they are not, the USERS are bricking their own machine, because they know there's always the risk, even more if they know they are purchasing a clone cart. If they don't know it, they shouldn't even be purchasing a flashcart.

People shouldn't also be using custom versions of the launcher because they covet some feature. If they want that feature so bad, ask for it, the developers have showed so far that they want to give what the users are asking for. Just be patient, and they'll add it when they can. Modifying the launcher is always risky, and people should be aware of that, so, to take precautions, they shouldn't even be shared freely.

TL: DR: Because, reasons!

Err... I actually buy all my games so don't put us all in the same basket, thanks but no thanks.

The main questions have been answered in a way that makes sense, so I only expect more new people coming in, more conspiracies and possibly a proof of what we already pretty much know.

No it's not that. Geez. You should probably learn how to read properly and thoroughly. Normatt's modified launcher won't do any bricking if the bricking code is not there in the first place. Claims so far have stated that there is indeed a code in the latest gw firmware that cause bricking (The code is not there in previous firmwares if I'm not mistaken).

I wonder if Gateway would have put this brick code in the launcher if there were no clones on the market? Can't say the r4i team didn't play a part in this sick demented fiasco. I'm not saying it's right, but there aint nothing wrong with protecting your investment. Now, as a gateway owner, I gotta deal with this shit. Screw the clone carts.

The gateway firmware installer hasn't been modified since 9/9/13, is that the latest gateway firmware you are referring to. Maybe you are referring of the launcher.

which thread are you reading, friend?

there has been only speculation, endless repeating of hearsay from people whose motives we cannot necessarily take for granted.

we think so, and the ... its so stupid .. 22pages peopel going nuts.. and its one or afew persons... using normatt file who probably wasnt done correctly, causing a brick.. Lesson to everyone who has Gateway car(s) , use gateways launcher.bat - ...

Installing gateway is - copy file1(gateway installer) to microSD - install - copy file2(launcher.bat to SD . Activate gateway by clicking Nintendo Profile .

Thats all you do. - So use Gateways Launcher.. not some user-made stuff.. :p

the truth is perhaps much simpler, see my previous posts.

we have seen ZERO evidence from any of these experts, when this would have been extremely simple to provide.
Err... maybe they just don't care ? I know I don't xD
Oh and I also have a life, I am assuming they do too xD

Hah, you're really a thick one.

Like someone said, part of the blame is on the clones for not testing their release, as well as not detecting the kill switch code in GW launcher.

Please boycott GW, and support the clones, who love you so much they want you to have the experience of being guinea pigs first hand! /s

Okay. :)

Listen, the chit-chat is pointless. All I'm saying that reputable sources say so, now be nice, don't swear and let's agree to disagree on this. ;)

I'm not doing chit-chat.

I'm making a very simple technical request - that the people who claim Gateway are reprogramming the eMMC controller on 3DS's, so as to make the console unrecoverable even by a NAND reflash, post the address offset to the code which writes to the eMMC controller registers.

OK

Let's put it in different categories to make the situation more clear to those who defend randomly putting Bricking code in your binaries.

Imagine that you've bought a BMW for a whole lot of your hard-earned cash. You sit down in your BMW, but something's missing... so you drive to the nearest gas station and buy a small ornament, for example a nice-smelling little tree. You really like it, but it doesn't have good string to hang it with - the original one is kinda flimsy... so you add your own string and hang it on the rearview mirror - it fills your car (let me stress this one more time - your privately-owned, personal, very expensive car) with wonderful scents of the forest... AND THEN YOUR CAR EXPLODES! KA-BLAM! YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO STICK A THIRD-PARTY THREAD THROUGH THE TREE ORNAMENT, F*CK YOUR BMW! ;O;

This is what happened. In this story, your 3DS'es are the BMW's, the tree ornament is the flashcart and the Launcher is the thread. :)

Oh and I also have a life, I am assuming they do too xD

I doubt most of them have interesting lives other than hacking handhelds and consoles and sitting on IRC all day, no offense ;-) not that this is in any way relevant to the discussion.

the point is: if you're gonna throw around very serious allegations, from a position of authority, back that shit up. how hard would it have been to provide evidence, if they had it?

Hah, you're really a thick one.
No i begged/asked people in this thread to provide info that Gateway is harmful..

1. Picture of bricked 3DS using Gateway card(s)
2. Info that Gateway bricked their console, not user-created stuff
3. Info that their 3DS has been bricked, we only heard 1-5 people say it has happened to them.

Edit: This thread attacks the only DEVS of HOMEBREW 3DS . You are damaging yourself by going nuts on people as Gateway without sustainable evidence.
